when you plant your own geocache and have the log book in with. After a while are you supposed to do something with the log book everyone writes in?

Hi :)

All you have to do is replace the log book / log strip when it gets full - anything more is optional! :)

Some people like to keep the old log books from their caches, some (very few) will check every written entry against the online logs, others will just throw the old ones away.

so in other words it is almost pointless to scribble your name because everyone comes here to log it. just wondering

No, not really pointless...

Your written name in the log book is the proof that you found the cache. If the diligent cache owner checks and doesn't see your name in the log they are entitled to delete your on-line log. Many don't bother to check but those who have complicated caches or ones with high D/T ratings often look through the log books to see whether they tally with on-line logs.

And some build "log cabins" from the log sheets and the pages of log books, and then turn the "log cabins" into travel bugs.

What happens if the log is too full to write your name? or if your pens is finicky? both happened to me on the same cache.

Use mud, blood, insect guts, whatever works in a pinch.

If the container is large enough you can add an extra bit of paper with your signature on it. (Some cachers carry spare log books or logging strips to replace full logs.)

Or, make a mark as fbinga suggests - some people will punch a small hole through the corner of a page, or tear of a tiny corner. Others will take a photograph of the cache and log book to prove to the owner that they had it in their hands.

Whatever you manage to do, when you've done your on-line log for the cache, please also add a separate 'Needs Maintenance' log to let the owner know the cache log condition - It is the owner's responsibility to add a new replacement log.
