Which Basic GPS is best?

I currently use my iPhone 3gs for geocaching, but it really chews up the battery!! Which is the best basic GPS unit that would do a good job?? Or is it best to save the Geocaches, and then use them from the saved list on your iPhone?

I'm very new to this!! :)

It is going to difficult to answer what is the "best basic GPSr".

There are units that will get you to the cache, but do little if anything else.

There are units that will do it all, including field notes to use as logs if you wish.

Some units have or use excellent mapping, others use nothing along those lines.

In the U.K., Garmins are popular. An eTrex 20 should do all you want +. An eTrex 10 is cheaper, but does little more that get you there.

Something to keep in mind is that most anyone with a simple, basic model usually upgrades at some point in time.

I agree with the previous answer - you can buy basic...and basic is exactly what you get!

I always reckon that going "at least one level up" from basic is the best buy. You will want maps (you will want maps!). Buy basic and what do you get - NO MAPS!

Etrex 20 (in my opinion) is the way to go, free UK maps (from talkytoaster), colour screen and has paperless capabilities. You'll need to take out Premium membership to get the benefit of paperless, but is well worth the money....

Do yourself a favour, don't buy 'too-basic' as you will regret it.

Thank you for your prompt help!

I have been looking at the Etrex 20, so think my mind is made up!! :D

Now maybe thinking of getting a membership too!! We are novice geocachers at the moment!! Think i would rather get a gps over an iPad!!!

'Best' is a very emotive word, depends what you mean by 'best' The Montana is an expensive GPS, one of the most expensive. That doesn't make it the 'best' for everyone.

What it is though is a device that can equally be used as a handheld (although I think it's too large to be ideal) and an auto GPS. It also has a very customable interface, more so than any other Garmin. However the software does appear a tad immature at the mo, with many users reporting unexpected shutdowns/restarts.

I have the Montana 650t and I love it. I also have the Dakota 20. The Montana fits in my hand perfectly, (I am 6-5 with large hands) and it is surprisingly light. The biggest thing for me is the large easy to read screen. Reading geocaching notes is a pleasure with the Montana. On the Dakota it was too small. I use the Montana for my vehicle navigation as well. I have an all in one GPS unit. The current software 3.97 is stable. Yes, the Montana is expensive, but that is usually the case for new Garmins that come out. I've been using GPS devices for over 10 years and by far the Montana is hands down the king for Geocaching. Easy to read, easy to input data with the touchscreen, long battery life and very rugged. I highly recommend it.
