jidanni
Ever notice the coordinates on utility pole labels near your home? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utility_poles#Coordinates_on_pole_labels I found them a neat way as a poorman's suppliment to GPS in crowed urban areas with poor reception. One could even say they are a way to drag non-GPS users into the fun... Anyway, how could I have not notice/understood them for all those years? Edited March 9, 2012 by jidanni Quote Link to comment
+Hasty Javelinas
Can't say I'd ever seen those before around here. Interesting. Quote Link to comment

Could be Lat/Lon, State Plane, UTM, or a private grid developed by the power company. Quote Link to comment
+mlrs1996
They are in some areas but not all also not all poles in an area will have them Quote Link to comment

Well in my case it is the http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Taiwan_Power_Company_grid . And in all cases they can be converted to WGS84, more or less exactly. So it is a good time to start noticing your humble utility pole. Nice backup, just in case one day Dr. Evil pulls the plug on GPS! Quote Link to comment
savant9
They have always used those around here (BC Canada) but its a metal tag the size of a credit card. They used to teach us in boyscouts to look at the pole if you were ever totally lost....hahaha Here is a pic of one in my yard. Coords are N49 04.879 W122 32.782 in WGS84, but that pole has been there since before '84 so my guess its its in NAD27 How exactly to decipher??? not sure but the 2232 I assume is for the W122 32 coord and the 4904 is the N49 04 coord , the rest of the numbers I am not too sure about. Edit>>>> This is exactly how to read that pole tag at my house... http://www.zoklet.net/totse/en/technology/science_technology/readpole.html Edited March 11, 2012 by savant9 Quote Link to comment
jidanni
Gee with such puny plates, how are BC rescue crews supposed to read them from a truck? OK, I added BC to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utility_poles#References . Thanks! Quote Link to comment
