Garmin GPSMAP 60csx

Hello again!

I'm currently planning a trip to West Coast Canada and will be taking my Garmin GPSMAP 60csx with me so that I can nab several caches whilst I'm there. Without owning a Topo map on a micro SD card that I can put in to the Garmin, how much detail will I be able to see over in Canada? Will I be able to GeoCache with it, or am I going to have to buy a micro SD card with the correct maps on it???

It'll work.

It has no base maps for Canada, not that the base map is of much use!

 

If you don't want to spend a lot of money on maps, take a look at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/country/ca

Or have a look at the Open Street Map site. (Not sure of the link for the downloadable version)

 

The other option is a paper map and just use the GPS's arrow to guide you.

I can't answer your question as i used a topo map on my Garmin Dakota 20 but i did the Vancouver to Calgary route via Whistler, Salmon Arm and Banff last year and loved it.

If you are going as far as Banff you HAVE to do GC134E. Here are a couple of photos i took from the top.

Don't bother buying a micro SD card with maps, buy yourself a blank micro SD card and swing past http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

 

Lots of open source maps, completely free and completely legal with it.

You'll want Ibycus Topo 4.0. They're topo maps for all of Canada, free as in speech and free as in beer. It's a whopper of a download, and a bit hard to find.

 

Worth every penny and then some.

Hi!

I've heard of ibycus' maps before, just not sure how to get them onto my gps unit once I've got a card. I've just started the download and think the 60csx is limited to a 2gb card. Do I need to buy a larger card to get the whole map series onto, as the total download is greater than 3gb, or, can I just select the area that I will be visiting ie British Columbia???

Once the download finishes, extract (see google) and run the installer; that puts the maps on your PC. Then, just select the maps of interest (eg, British Columbia) in MapSource or BaseCamp, and send those to the unit. One province should take far less than 2GB.

 

Putting the whole country into your unit is overkill, unless you happen to travel all across the country continually. BTW, if you try to go beyond 2GB in that unit, you'll need firmware 4.00 (4.20?) or later, which I found to my dismay after buying a 4GB card with maps on it. Updating software from Garmin always fills me with dread.

With the 60CSx the real limits are a 4GB file size for gmapsupp.img and 2025 tiles. I am using a 8GB card without any issue.

 

If you plan to go off the beaten track and hike some trails you might find the Northwest Trails maps from gpsfiledepot a good buy (free). They have better coverage in the NW US but they have some trails in BC too.
