The TalkyToaster maps can be found at http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm. I use them on my Oregon and they are excellent.

To quote from the website: "OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways."

They don't have every footpath on but in my experience they are of a high standard and are free!

Hello There,

This is the page for the TalkyToaster maps HERE.

Then this is the zipped download you need 111216-British-Isles+Contours-Routable-GMAPSUPP.zip

There's a lot of info to help you get them on the GPSr, have a play and shout if you need more help.

Regards

Bernard

Once you've done this save the unzipped file as GMAPSUPP.IMG and place it in a folder called GARMIN. Then just pop the micro SD card into your GPS and your ready to play!!

Good luck.

It looks like the street names in your area aren't quite complete, Hannah:

Perhaps once you get into OpenStreetMaps a bit, you can contribute some information for that area!

I think you'll enjoy your new eTrex 20. (Although I'm not quite sure why Santa told you in advance what he's bringing...) I've had mine since they came out a few months ago, and I like it a lot.

Merry Christmas!

I use the Legend Hcx and the above set up works well in it. I'm not familiar with the new Etrex models, so I bow my head to those who can supply you with more precise and up to date information on the new Garmin range.

I'm sure you'll get good use out of your new device...good luck with it.

One improvement is that she'll be able to have multiple map images and name each one however she wants. No more just one "gmapsupp.img" file.

You need to unzip the map into a folder. On my Mac I use Unachiver http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver

WHen you connect your Garmin to the USB port of your Mac it should turn the Garmin on and put it into USB mode. After a few seconds it will appear in Finder as an external drive. Navigate to the Garmin folder. At this point its a good idea to open another Finder window (File/New Finder Window) and navigate in that window to the unzipped map which should be a folder by now with a file called 111216-British-Isles+Contours-Routable-GMAPSUPP.IMG in it. Drag that to the GPX folder in the Garmin folder in the other finder window. When done eject the GPSr from Finder and your good to go. Hope that makes sense.

Just gone through the same process with the wife. I bought her a Etrex 30 for Christmas.

Oh and I seem to have a zip of the map and a hardrive?

Hannah, Mac OS X has included a zip/unzip utility for many years now. Just double-click on the file and it should unzip automatically.

Your right, I forgot that. I installed the free unarchiver because I come across a lot of other compression standards like RAR files which need a decompressor.
