Spanner15
I'm getting a eTrex 20 for christmas tomorrow, and talky toaster was recommended. Please can someone tell me what to do? I have got basecamp off the app store (I'm on Mac, not PC) and I'm not sure what to do next, which map etc. Thank you. & Merry Christmas! Quote Link to comment

+Pieman
The TalkyToaster maps can be found at http://talkytoaster.info/ukmaps.htm. I use them on my Oregon and they are excellent. To quote from the website: "OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways." They don't have every footpath on but in my experience they are of a high standard and are free! Quote Link to comment

WrongwayUK
If you have difficulty with the zip files on the Mac. Use Unarchiver from here http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver Edited December 24, 2011 by WrongwayUK Quote Link to comment

Spanner15
Oh, and do the maps have street names on? Thanks Guys Quote Link to comment
Wintertime
It looks like the street names in your area aren't quite complete, Hannah: http://osm.org/go/evjGYDUW- Perhaps once you get into OpenStreetMaps a bit, you can contribute some information for that area! I think you'll enjoy your new eTrex 20. (Although I'm not quite sure why Santa told you in advance what he's bringing...) I've had mine since they came out a few months ago, and I like it a lot. Merry Christmas! Patty Quote Link to comment
+chillypenguin
Yes. PS Don't bother to rename it, the etrex 20/30 is not fussy about the filename, as long as the extension is correct. Quote Link to comment

I use the Legend Hcx and the above set up works well in it. I'm not familiar with the new Etrex models, so I bow my head to those who can supply you with more precise and up to date information on the new Garmin range. I'm sure you'll get good use out of your new device...good luck with it. Quote Link to comment

One improvement is that she'll be able to have multiple map images and name each one however she wants. No more just one "gmapsupp.img" file. Patty Quote Link to comment

Spanner15
Oh and I seem to have a zip of the map and a hardrive? Quote Link to comment
WrongwayUK
You need to unzip the map into a folder. On my Mac I use Unachiver http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver WHen you connect your Garmin to the USB port of your Mac it should turn the Garmin on and put it into USB mode. After a few seconds it will appear in Finder as an external drive. Navigate to the Garmin folder. At this point its a good idea to open another Finder window (File/New Finder Window) and navigate in that window to the unzipped map which should be a folder by now with a file called 111216-British-Isles+Contours-Routable-GMAPSUPP.IMG in it. Drag that to the GPX folder in the Garmin folder in the other finder window. When done eject the GPSr from Finder and your good to go. Hope that makes sense. Quote Link to comment

I installed the free unarchiver because I come across a lot of other compression standards like RAR files which need a decompressor. Quote Link to comment
