PeterHewson
Hi all. I'm trying to figure out if the geocaching app will work on an iPod touch in a Dual gps cradle with just the gps and no wifi. I've tried some other apps that I thought would allow me to do this, but when out of range of wifi they don't work. The Dual cradle works great with Navigon, btw, so it does half of what I was hoping for. I suspect though that the geocaching app requires wifi to work (or cell reception on iphone), which means no go for hiking geocaching, just urban caches. Does anyone have any experience with this? +mpilchfamily
The Official app should work with it but how well the GPS cradle will work with finding a cache depends on which cradle you have. Some of them are only designed for car navigation. So they don't do to well when going off road. Since maps are not very accurate they have a feature that keeps your position snapped to the nearest road within 50 feet or so. In some units this feature is default and can't be changed. Thus making them bad for caching. Quote Link to comment

PeterHewson
No internet means no maps This is a situation where I was fairly certain of the answer, but was hoping I was wrong. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Quote Link to comment
+dfx
Isn't it possible to pre-load the maps and store them on the device for offline use? Quote Link to comment
+mpilchfamily
Not as far as the official app goes. I haven't even found a way to cache the map from the map app that comes with the iTouch. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
I am moving this thread from the Geocaching Topics forum to the GPS and Technology forum. Quote Link to comment
+TomToad
You wont be able to use maps, but the app will still point you in the right direction. You do need to make sure that your location is being determined by GPSr and not by the WiFi signal. I have GPSLite by MotionX on my touch. If you click on menu/My Position, you will see a bar under GPS Signal. It will have a green bar when there is a solid satellite lock. It could take several minutes. Turning off WiFi will help it to get a lock faster. Quote Link to comment
+user13371
The correct answer to everyone who said something like "no internet in the field means no maps" ... Topo Maps Download USGS quads while at home for when you will be out of data signal range. You can also import your GPX files into this app to show waypoints, and your add-on GPS will work just fine to show your location. Edited September 5, 2011 by Portland Cyclist Quote Link to comment
+Two Ton Whale
On my phone, without internet but with GPS, the maps don't load but the GPS is still accurate and will tell you how far you are, just without the benefit of the seeing the map. Quote Link to comment
