NGS benchmark AE0

While in St Augustine this weekend, my friend spotted a benchmark on the angled seawall by Castillo de San Marcos that I have not been able to locate among the benchmarks listed on geocaching.com although it seems like it should be there.

Station No. AEO (AE0?)

 

 

(Sorry the photo is blurry; didn't realize it when I took it.)

 

Coords I recorded: N 29 53.833 W 81 18.655 On Google Maps those coords show as being just inside the seawall, but it's pretty close to the spot.

 

It is definitely NOT AQ1543 (NPS Reset) as we found that earlier in the day; that one is on the flat sidewalk by the seawall to the south, much closer to the parking lot.

With the exception of the long standing clerical error IN THE DESIGNATION, this one sure reads right.

AJ4721'FEET NORTH-NORTHWEST OF THE SOUTH EDGE, AND 61.8 FEET NORTHEAST OF A

AJ4721'CHISELED X DESIGNATED AS MARION. THIS MARK HAS BEEN ADDED TO FLORIDA

AJ4721'TIDE STATION 872 0576 AS A TIDE MARK.

 

However the rest of the story is that its DS L/L is 1500 feet off and it is not in GEOCAC. The same goes for MARION (AQ0263).

Be sure and get the agency correct when you do your waymark: USGS /= USC&GS.

I find the HISTORY for both of these marks interesting. AJ4721 for the mix of reporting agencies and AQ0263 for that GOOD - MARK NOT FOUND - GOOD - sequence. Never trust a MARK NOT FOUND! kayakbird

That style disk was used as part of the WPA work in the 1930's.
