+JL_HSTRE Posted May 2, 2011 Posted May 2, 2011 While in St Augustine this weekend, my friend spotted a benchmark on the angled seawall by Castillo de San Marcos that I have not been able to locate among the benchmarks listed on geocaching.com although it seems like it should be there. US Coast & Geodetic Survey and State Survey Station No. AEO (AE0?) (Sorry the photo is blurry; didn't realize it when I took it.) Coords I recorded: N 29 53.833 W 81 18.655 On Google Maps those coords show as being just inside the seawall, but it's pretty close to the spot. It is definitely NOT AQ1543 (NPS Reset) as we found that earlier in the day; that one is on the flat sidewalk by the seawall to the south, much closer to the parking lot. Quote

Joshism, This link gives a bit of information about the Depression era State Survey project in Nebraska - many were planted, but few were PID'd. kayakbird http://www.penryfamily.com/surveying/statesurvey.html Quote
kayakbird Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 (edited) AJ4721. With the exception of the long standing clerical error IN THE DESIGNATION, this one sure reads right. AJ4721 STATION DESCRIPTION AJ4721 AJ4721'DESCRIBED BY FL DEPT OF NAT RES 1987 (RWH) AJ4721'THE MARK IS LOCATED ON TOP OF THE SOUTHEAST CANTONMENT (SEAWALL) FOR AJ4721'CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS NATIONAL MONUMENT IN ST. AUGUSTINE. THE MARK AJ4721'BEARS 45.5 FEET WEST-SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE AJ4721'CANTONMENT (SEAWALL), 4.5 FEET SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF THE NORTH EDGE, 7.8 AJ4721'FEET NORTH-NORTHWEST OF THE SOUTH EDGE, AND 61.8 FEET NORTHEAST OF A AJ4721'CHISELED X DESIGNATED AS MARION. THIS MARK HAS BEEN ADDED TO FLORIDA AJ4721'TIDE STATION 872 0576 AS A TIDE MARK. However the rest of the story is that its DS L/L is 1500 feet off and it is not in GEOCAC. The same goes for MARION (AQ0263). Edited May 3, 2011 by kayakbird Quote
+JL_HSTRE Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 Thanks for the research help! First USGS benchmark I have found that was not listed here. I'll be Waymarking it. Quote
southpawaz Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 Thanks for the research help! First USGS benchmark I have found that was not listed here. I'll be Waymarking it. Be sure and get the agency correct when you do your waymark: USGS /= USC&GS. Quote
kayakbird Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 First USGS benchmark I have found that was not listed here. I'll be Waymarking it. Had this ready to post late last night, but my Alltel - soon to be AT&T - aircard got tired. Not USGS disk, but CGS+SS (won't be very many Waymarks in that category). AJ4721 HISTORY - Date Condition Report By AJ4721 HISTORY - UNK MONUMENTED CGS+SS AJ4721 HISTORY - 1987 GOOD FLDNR AJ4721 HISTORY - 20060718 GOOD USPSQD AJ4721 HISTORY - 20070318 GOOD FLDEP AJ4721 HISTORY - 20090103 GOOD GEOCAC AQ0263 HISTORY - Date Condition Report By AQ0263 HISTORY - 1972 MONUMENTED CGS AQ0263 HISTORY - 1972 GOOD NGS AQ0263 HISTORY - 1972 MARK NOT FOUND NGS AQ0263 HISTORY - 1987 GOOD FLDNR AQ0263 HISTORY - 20070318 GOOD FLDEP AQ0263 HISTORY - 20090103 GOOD GEOCAC AQ0263 I find the HISTORY for both of these marks interesting. AJ4721 for the mix of reporting agencies and AQ0263 for that GOOD - MARK NOT FOUND - GOOD - sequence. Never trust a MARK NOT FOUND! kayakbird Quote
Z15 Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 That style disk was used as part of the WPA work in the 1930's. Read this report, in the contents you want the "History of the Local Control Surveys Project" https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explorer&chrome=true&srcid=0B2spwGyJdPXHM2RkZmVhOGEtNzRlZi00ZTFjLTllNGEtY2FhMjljYWE3NWY3&hl=en&authkey=CKWq0pcP Quote
