+Clive and Juliana
Still fairly new here but I am working on a cipher and just can't figure out which type it is. I have googled and used paper. I have figured out some, I think, but one part is just different. What are some of your ideas (or websites) that you have used in your previous ciphering caches to help figure out what type of cipher you were dealing with? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
+hobgoblinkiteflier
There's some interesting information about ciphers on Wikipedia. One extremely difficult cache that I successfully found used the Enigma machine as part of the cipher . Some bright people have put web pages with Java applets that simulate the electro-mechanical machine. Very useful! Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
Look for anything that is the approximate number of digits in a coordinate and really concentrate on that area. Google some of the phrases and words on the listing - just see what comes up. Check for hidden (white text). Check for exif information in photos. Check the HTML for clues. Quote Link to comment
+niraD
Many cipher-based puzzle caches include hints about the type of cipher used. Sometimes the clues are anagrams. Sometimes they are references to people who invented/popularized the cipher. Sometimes they are oblique references to the mechanism(s) used by the cipher. Or they could be something else entirely. +Clive and Juliana
All great ideas, I've tried a few and will explore some more. It also helps in giving me ideas for a mystery cache. Keep the ideas coming, maybe I'll find one that cracks this cipher. I do appreciate the info. +Clive and Juliana
Looks like you are trying to solve this one. Looks like a real challenge. Good luck. Well, I won't publicly say which I'm trying to solve because I don't want it to be exposed to everyone , but the one I am working on, I believe I found something I overlooked earlier. Tomorrow I will know for sure and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Quote Link to comment
