+jakiesfolks
We will be in Northeastern Minnesota this weekend, no definate location...maybe Ely or where ever. Would like suggestions for caches with some historical interest or unique, out of the way locations that we can get to by 4 wheel drive truck and not too difficult climbing or walking. Thanks for your help! Quote Link to comment
+Chokecherry
I've found a bunch in Ely. Any Eagle Eye's caches are fun in that area. I'm not a big fan of caching on the mine dumps in the area but there's some you can get to by 4 wheeler on mine dumps. Quote Link to comment
+bflentje
If you'll be on the north shore along Superior I can name several MUST DO caches. - Silver Island Treasure - Silver Cliff - Black Beach Up near Ely, don't forget to visit Bear Head Lake State Park. There are only a couple of caches there but the park just won some recent coolest park award up against parks all over the country. The park is gorgeous and if you get there before peak color season is over, you won't be disappointed. Quote Link to comment
+Chokecherry
There's also a bunch of caches in Tower (not too far from Ely) and the Soudan Underground Mine. You'd see Lake Vermilion then. And if you're way north in Gheen you can get Alvin's phoneline the oldest cache in the state. But I would probably be careful out there during hunting season. Quote Link to comment
+NOSNOW
I would suggest Birds-n-View GCGP9A. It is prime bird season. The Hawk Ridge Observatory has a station setup on the road, where they count the number of migrating raptors. If conditions are correct, you can see lot of raptors. At the observation stand they will bring some birds out and show them close up. Quote Link to comment
+jakiesfolks
Thanks for the great suggestions, just what we were looking for! We're for sure going to be in the Lutsen area on Saturday and thought about driving the Gunflint Trail, since I have never been on it, but we are keeping an open mind for the rest of the time. Any other suggested MUST do caches or places to see are appreciated. Thanks! Quote Link to comment

Please keep in mind that I do not believe that the Gun FLint Trail will take you to Ely, if that's where you're ultimately headed. Quote Link to comment
+Red_Devil35
There are a couple of earthcaches, a virtual at the International Wolf Center, and a web cam cache in downtown Ely. Quote Link to comment
+Chokecherry
If you get to Ely GC27H66 is one I really enjoyed there. Quote Link to comment
Keystone
I am moving this thread from the Geocaching Topics forum to the Midwest forum. Quote Link to comment
+jakiesfolks
Thanks for moving the thread...thought it may belong here but wasn't sure. Not sure if we will end up in Ely or not...right now it's all open ended. Thanks for your suggestions! Quote Link to comment
