+shoemanshoe
Lately I have noticed that my Etrex Venture HC is not storing geocaches the same way. At first I noticed that some weren't coming up until I deleted others. I was able to get to them. However, now I have downloading geocaches onto the unit and they won't show up at all when I go to finds - then geocaches. But when I look on the little mapping screen they will be on there! Any help you can give me? Do I need to change a setting? Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
On that unit the only distinction between an ordinary waypoint and a Geocache is the icon used for it. Typically and closed treasure chest attached to a waypoint makes it a Geocache. However, I know you can change the default icon setting - just can't remember how right now. I once got my older VentueCx stuck on using a red flag for Geocaches. Quote Link to comment
+shoemanshoe
Thanks for the reply. On the map page the geocaches I just downloaded show up as unopened chests, which is the correct icon. But they still do not show up on my find - geocache screen. Help! Quote Link to comment
+Red90
You can change the definition of a "Geocache" in the setup to match any type of icon. Verify that it matches the EXACT icon you are seeing. There may be two types of closed treasure chest icons. Quote Link to comment
+coggins
I think this is the old "Find nearest" situation, maybe switch to find (then press the menu button) and select ..."by name" Not enough info to say... Quote Link to comment
+IBcrashen
At first I noticed that some weren't coming up until I deleted others. I was able to get to them. have to go with coggins on this one with the above statement. On the find/nearest list it will only list the first 50. If you want to find them on the gps do what he posted. Find/menu and switch to search by name. Quote Link to comment
+shoemanshoe
I was thinking perhaps since the geocaches are over 100 miles away they are not showing up on the find screen? I have been unable to find the button to change from nearest to by name as of yet. Any help there? Quote Link to comment

Any help there? that would do it also but switching to "by name" will take care of that also. when your list of geocaches comes up hit menu again and it should be there. Dont have my girlfriends etrex so not positve. Edited June 23, 2010 by IBcrashen Quote Link to comment
+shoemanshoe
OK, I think I got it. I'm baffled why distance would have anything to do with how they are listed on the unit. Is there another setting I can change for this? Quote Link to comment

Is there another setting I can change for this? Your unit is trying to be helpful and show you the targets for caching that are nearby (by default). To keep it simple they show you the closest 50 unless you view by name. Quote Link to comment
+shoemanshoe
I absolutely understand that. Thing is, I have less than 50 geocaches in my unit currently, but the newly added cache listings (100+ miles) still won't show up on the geocache find page. Still baffled.......... I assume they did this to keep the search algorithm fast. 100 miles is the limit for search by nearest. Just change to search by name. It is very old software and a very old design..... +shoemanshoe
I made that assumption (very old technology), but was praying it was not true. LOL Thank you all for your help. I think I've got it now. Happy trails! Quote Link to comment
