Has anyone seen the cool Mt Whitney benchmark replicas at REI?

They have a full size replica for, I believe, $32, and a cool pin (about 1" diameter) for around $8. I opted for the pin, but I still might go back and get the full size one, seeing as I'm enjoying hunting benchmarks so much.

Just FYI, but the REI benchmarks come direct to Mountainclimb. They even make an REI specific benchmark for each of the REI store openings, which is mounted somewhere (on the building?)

Interesting, Jeremy. I've seen one on the floor in the middle of our local (and relatively new) REI store and wondered about it. Now I know the rest of the story.

It's pretty cool what you run into when working on the site. My favorite benchmarks are still the ones at Disney world. Mickey ears end up on everything!

USGS has a whole bunch of benchmarks (just got one from a relative who works there). Check out their site www.geositu.com

icon_redface.gif just realized that this site is the same as the mountainclimb site mentioned earlier. icon_redface.gif

I went to my local REI (Bloomington, MN), and they didn't know if they had replica benchmarks or not. The staff people I talked to didn't even know what a benchmark was!!!! I guess I'll just have to order one on-line. 15T
