tarcher1216
Well can anyone give me any advice on gps units? Will my Megellian roadmaster work for geocaching? My nephew said it should work. Or should I invest into a spearate unit altogether? Now I on't have allot of money to invest but I dont want cheap unit. Say around the $175 to $200 mark. I see this as an new adventure and perhaps a way to get my family OUT of the house and enjoy the fresh air for once. Quote Link to comment
aniyn
Road-nav units don't tend to work well; They just aren't designed for this sort of thing. A Garmin Venture HC seems to be what gets recommended most whenever people ask this question. But really, the most important thing is to have fun Quote Link to comment
+TheChagnons
I agree, we used our TomTom at first when we started, and we just weren't getting good results from it. Luckily, my brother in law is currently letting us use his Garmin etrex for the time being. You can try using your current model, and if you think Geocaching is something you will really get into doing, the great people on this board can tell you good models to try. I have heard the Garmin etrex HC is good for beginners, and you can get it on Amazon.com for around $125 with free shipping. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I have heard the Garmin etrex HC is good for beginners, There is an Etrex H and an Etrex Venture HC. I think you are referring to the latter. It is a good choice for someone who has a GPS in their automobile. As others mentioned automotive units aren't a good tool for the job. They are built for the dashboard, not the outdoors and usually don't have some key features like extended battery life, compass navigation screen and water resistance. Some don't even allow you to input coordinates. Quote Link to comment
