  1. We keep a trash bag in the back of our tahoe when we find trash while caching, we put some in the bag until it is filled. However, I am seriously thinking of buying some surgical gloves to use to do so, the trash in a lot of areas is just revolting. One would wonder why you would hide a cache in a place so disgusting as some of the places we have found. EWWW!
  2. If you sign up for the email newsletter, every Friday you will receive a list of current geocaching events in your area, and new caches by distance in your area. You don't need to be a premium member to receive the newsletter.
  3. We did not have any luck without a GPS, but we are not a resourceful family...lol! We looked for our first cache for 15 without a GPS, said screw it and ran to walmart to buy one...
  4. So, my brother just called me all upset, he accidently put a crack in a small cache container while trying to take out a cache from it's hiding spot. He wanted to know what is the best thing to do in this situation. I told him to email the owner and offer to replace or pay for a new container. He was just going to replace it anyways without saying anything. What should you do in this situation?
  5. Hey, thanks for posting this! I had heard about it, but not been able to find the time to search online for it!
  6. Hmmm.....very interesting, could be either of those. Now, on to find the darn thing and report back exactly what kind of rhino they are referring to!
  7. Easy or Not Rte 2 Cache #2 The hint is 'it's a rhino'
  8. No, we've seen 2 caches in our area that refer to the cache as being a 'rhino'...
  9. Can someone please tell us what the heck a Rhino is???? (In geocaching terms people, I don't want to see posts going off telling me what type of animal it is, what area it inhabits, what consists of it's diet, etc. LOL!)
  10. I agree, we used our TomTom at first when we started, and we just weren't getting good results from it. Luckily, my brother in law is currently letting us use his Garmin etrex for the time being. You can try using your current model, and if you think Geocaching is something you will really get into doing, the great people on this board can tell you good models to try. I have heard the Garmin etrex HC is good for beginners, and you can get it on Amazon.com for around $125 with free shipping.
  11. Over here we don't call it a DNF, it's a 'we're-coming-back-another-time-and-search-till-we-find-it'
  12. You should have gotten an email stating how long it would take and/or communication from your reviewer.
  13. Um, I would love to find a new car as a cache!!
  14. Congratulations! Now the addiction begins..lol
  15. I know it can be discouraging....especially for me when we are trying to find one in the woods! In time, they will get easier and you will know what you are looking for.
  16. We saw that too! Ironically my husband was just talking about how excited he was to figure out how to callibrate the compass on his new handheld GPS when they started talking about geocaching on the show! LOL
  17. I have to agree with the others. The more you do it, the better you get at it. My hubby likes to try and find a few caches on his way home from work, and we take time as a family to go out twice during the week, and if it is nice on the weekend, we go for 2 or 3 hours. It has helped us sharpen our geocaching skills as a family.
  18. No, we never feel guilty. We have run into situations where there were trespessing signs posted near a cache, and opted out of following through with it, so none of the caches we have found have we felt guilty about since they were all on property we felt comfortable being on. If the area is full of muggles, we just try to come back at another time. We are trying to teach our girls about being stealthy..lol Discreet they are not!

  20. While I only have 18 finds so far, my friend has over 500. She would be the once who would actually hid it. I was just trying to find out if we could hide it.. I completely disagree with the above advice. If the urge to hide a cache strikes you, go ahead and hide it. Don't worry about reaching a certain number of finds before you can hide a cache. There are people who hide great caches with just a couple of finds under their belts and some people with thousands of finds who hide crappy caches. I agree with this statement. My family only has around 55 finds, but we were anxious to hide a cache in an excellent location right down the road from our home. We paid attention to what containers we found were dry, which were wet, ways people hid their caches and did a LOT of reading up here on the forums. So far, so good, all of our feedback has been good regarding our hidden cache.
  21. Why are you required to bushwack with you 4 year old? Because I can't leave her back on the trail....she's 4!! I'm just saying, nothing forces you to keep chasing a cache. If you call it off before GZ then it is a false start, not a DNF. When I come upon a situation that I would rather not put the wife and/or kids into, I mark the cache as a me only and come back when I can. Oh no, you are absolutely right. Sometimes I stay right where I am with my daughter, and my husband continues on and finds the cache, logs it and TNLN since our daughter(s) are the ones that really only take something from a cache. We have one username for our whole family (or is that wrong btw to do?). I am just saying, it is frustrating when we didn't know how bad the terrain really is, and wasn't stated on the cache page, and my daughter was excited to find the 'treasure' and mid hunt we realize she can't continue. No big deal though, it doesn't happen too much.
