+Markwell
Your caching trip may be #2, but if you've never found it before, you can't be sure, so you should post #1. If you've found it before and are back in the area, and it's not where the owner hid it, then a Needs Maintenance or Needs Archived log would be more appropriate, and that would be #2 Quote Link to comment
+hukilaulau
It's not uncommon to see a FOUND IT log that says, "If it was there I would have found it" or "I saw where it should have been so I'm claiming the find." One of the greatest twists of logic in a FOUND IT log said: "Couldn't log a DNF cuz it wasn't there to be found." Ouch! Now sometimes as a joke I write: "I saw where I would have placed it so I'm claiming the find." (But of course I don't) Of course, the answer to your question is as others have said. All the examples I have given are bogus. Quote Link to comment
+hukilaulau
This also reminded me of one particular cache where a number of people looked for it unsuccessfully... MOST logged it as a find anyway (including some after it was confirmed missing and archived!) A few logged DNF's A couple logged notes One logged a "Needs maintanence" People play the game in different ways! Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
It's simple, it means you hunted the cache and couldn't find it. The reason is irrelevant. Quote Link to comment

+Arrow42
I've posted this before, but I think it bears repeating: Here's how I see it... - If I don't get to the site I won't log anything - If I get to the site and abort the search for reasons unrelated to the cache, I won't log anything - If I get to the site and abort the search for reasons related to the cache, I will log a note - If I search and don't find anything, I'll log a DNF - If I search and find the cache, but am unable to retrieve it, I'll log a DNF - If I search, find the cache and sign the log I'll log a Found I think my personal rules are well within the spirit of the game as intended by Groundspeak. These general categories should encompass most scenarios. Feel free to take from my list anything you find valuable. Edit: To add to this... If I'm sure the cache is missing or destroyed I will still log a DNF, but with the addition of a Needs Maintenance log. Edited September 19, 2009 by Arrow42 Quote Link to comment

My list would be quite different - If I don't get to the site I'll log nothing or a DNF depending on whether or not I started the hunt. If I didn't start the hunt, but there was an interesting story behind why I couldn't, I may log a note - If I get to the site and abort the search for reasons unrelated to the cache, I will log a DNF - If I get to the site and abort the search for reasons related to the cache, I will log a DNF - If I search and don't find anything, I'll log a DNF - If I search and find the cache, but am unable to retrieve it, I'll log a DNF - If I search, find the cache and sign the log I'll log a Found I also think my personal rules are well within the spirit of the game as intended by Ground Quote Link to comment
