Philologus
I've tried searching through all the help pages, forums etc, but not quite sure what the option of "Add a waypoint to the log" actually does or for what purpose it might be used. Quote Link to comment
fegan
It could be used to mark a yellow jacket nest you passed on the way to a cache (a recent cache near me could have used this one). Quote Link to comment
tozainamboku
It doesn't serve any purpose. Its a remnant of the old locationless caches which have now been moved to Waymarking. When logging a locationless cache you had to provide the coordinates of your "find" and you used this feature to do so. That being said, the feature still serves a purpose on the Corrected Coordinates log. If a cache owner moves acache (a short distance - up to 528 ft), he can post a Corrected Coordinates log and use this feature to provide the new coordinates. This will update the coordinates for the cache as well. Many people use this feature for providing corrected coordinates in their 'Found It' log. If they find the caches coordinates to be significantly off (for example, over 40 ft) they may post the reading they got at the cache in this field. Of course they could just as well include their readings in the text of their log. Some paperless caching options (like the Garmin Oregon and Colorado) do not display the data that is added to a log this way. So if you are providing a correction to the posted coordinates this way, a paperless cacher may not see them. It is probably better to just put your coordinates in the log text if you think they are needed. Quote Link to comment
Ladybug Kids
In addition to providing alternative coordinates to a cache location, I use the "add a waypoint" function to flag other points of interest such as a trail junction, river crossing, etc., that the cache owner did not include as a waypoint on the cache page. I own an Oregon and hadn't noticed that the coordinates don't come with the logs. I'll have to check that out. Quote Link to comment
Knight2000
On a second try for a local cache my wife found it while our Oregon showed 81' away. (No wonder I couldn't find it!) I used the additional waypoint to help future cachers and I'd like the owner to fix the coords. (New cacher.) Quote Link to comment

Bear and Ragged
Don't use it to post final coordinates for ? Puzzle/Unknown caches or Multi caches! Spoils the fun for others. (or not! ) Quote Link to comment
