Oregon 400T - can you change cache coordinates?

Recommended Posts

I got into Geocaching last spring using a Garmin Etrex Legend. Have been itching to upgrade and finally decided to treat myself to an Oregon 400T which arrived today. :D

I have been trying to find one cache in particular and was eager to try out my new toy. I downloaded the cache from geocaching.com to the Oregon with no problem. But it's a puzzle cache and the given coordinates are fake ones. I've already solved the puzzle and know the correct coordinates. But I can't figure out how to change the downloaded fake coordinates to the correct ones?

The owners manual was no help at all. I've hit about every screen I can think of with no luck. Can someone tell me if it is possible to change downloaded geocache coordinates, and if so, how?

I don't think that you can change the location of a geocache in the Oregon.

I use a couple of approaches in situations like this. The easiest is probably to create a waypoint with an appropriate name and with the adjusted co-ordinates.

Or you could use a program like GSAK and change the co-ordinates of the actual geocache and then upload that to your Oregon.

I have a new Colorado and I had the same problem. I'm not sure if this solution will work on the Oregon but here goes. Two ways; 1. Mark a new waypoint and then change the name and the coords, 2. use the Mapsource software that came with the unit to create and then download a custom waypoint. The second method is kind of hard when you're on the trail. Either way they show up in the unit as a waypoint, not a geocache.

Thanks!! I went ahead and loaded it as a waypoint. I'm not "techy" enough to know how to do the other things suggested (maybe someday...) I'm very surprised that such a simple thing to do on a $100 E-Trex can't be done on a $600 Oregon. Wasn't expecting to actually lose things in this upgrade. Overall I'm still very happy with it, and at least there is a workaround for it, I'm guessing that's how to manage multi part caches as well, adding the extra legs in the waypoint area instead of the geocache area. Now I have to figure out the best kind of batteries to use, I've already used up 1/4 of the battery life of my regular batteries just playing with it off and on today. Rechargeable might be the way to go...

We have a colorado, and we definitely use rechargable batteries. We also take along an extra set of charged rechargables to make sure we have enough power. We also load new coords as waypoints. Enjoy!! :D

You can not change the geocache itself on the Oregon unit, but you can quickly save it as a waypoint. From the cache description page there should be 3 buttons at the bottom of the screen. The back arrow, the "go" button" and a button in the middle with a flag. If you hit that flag button, it will save the geocache as a waypoint, then you can easily use the waypoint manager to change the location for that waypoint. Another option is as others have mentioned, and mark a new waypoint then edit its location..

just typed a reply but hit wrong button part way through so if this double posts I'm sorry...

Thank you everyone! I did the cache as a waypoint and was finally able to find it after work today. I've been trying since summer and it was a real thrill to finally nab it. The Oregon got me within 4 feet which was pretty good considering I was inside my car and it was a cloudy night and there were buildings around.

Going to take some getting used to but I think I will be very happy with it. Definitely going to look into getting the rechargable batteries cuz I like the backlight full bright and want it to stay on and not blink off after only half a minute or so, so I'll burn through regular batteries pretty fast.

I use GSAK to create a clone waypoint of the cache as a .gpx file and then just change the coordinates to the solved puzzle and add an F to the end of the cache name. Only problem with that is if you upload the find via field notes it will not really work since it's not a real cache. No problem, after finding the cache I mark the real one as found.

I am using two sets of Powerex batteries and a La-Crosse BC-900 charger and usually get a full days caching out of one charged set of batteries.
