New coin proposal

Here is the front of the Star Trek geocoin I am designing. I am still working on getting the back approved. I don't know yet if I will mint this because of budget issues, but if I can get enough people to preorder then I will mint it and make it trackable. If this becomes popular it will be coin 1 of a 4 coin Star Trek series. Please let me know what you think.

If you get approval for a go-ahead on this, you can count me in to buy a few. Please email me if you're looking for pre-sales!

love it for sure! may i ask something? why spend the extra dough to make it trackable since most collectors don't release or even activate their coins anyway! it would save money and you could still have them numbered sequentially.

of course, that would probably be breaking some rule or another here, but it is a thought.

That's an interesting point made by Red Shoes Girl, though I will say that I do tend to release my coins and probably wouldn't be as interested in a coin for coin's sake.

1. If you are going to post it here, the coin must be trackable.

2. Copyright issues with the Star Trek slogan and name?

See this thread.

And this one.

And this one.

And this one to start.

As I look through some of the other threads, it would seem that if you change things just enough (nine points) it can resemble what you want it to, but still be different enough to pursue. I don't think you can copyright a phrase ("Space, the final frontier") but you can rearrnage the orientation of the stars and slightly change the sidebar leaf clusters.

Of course we still don't know what your other side looks like.

Where in the world do you ask corporations for copyright permissions? I have tried finding a link to ask Paramount Pictures about obtaining permission but I can't find it.

Also if I used my own picture would that be ok? I have a model of the U.S.S Enterprise and I could take a picture of that to use, but since Enterprise is copyrighted that might not work.

Send an email to landsharkz ... they did a coin with an Enterprise on it (you can see one that my nephew and I have been dipping here). Maybe they can give you some tips.

Found this on Viacom's website.....

So I don't think the risk is worth it without permission, I did contact Viacom and am waiting to here back and see what they say about it, could be awhile though.

I really wish you luck with Viacom and hope they are more responsive than those I have tried to contact. I've tried to get hold of three different corporations/organizations to seek permission to use a logo or artwork for various projects I've had in mind. Not one has even responded to my emails.

I know there is at least one coin out there with an image of the Enterprise.. the 1701eh Memorial coin.

If Viacom doesn't reply then I will remove, Space, The final Frontier and replace it with something else and mint the coin I think. Since I would only mint at least 100, maybe 250 so I can name it and have a custom Icon, I don't think I would get in much trouble, I could also sell it so I don't make a profit, then I won't even be making money off of it.

I am more than likely going to redo this coin with a picture of a Klingon Bird of Prey. That way it keeps its sci-theme, but it won't infringe upon copyrights because i am going to use a picture of a christmas ornament I have, which is my own picture. I will also be removing the space the final frontier saying. It will be a day or two until I make my new post. This will give me time to Photoshop a good quality image showing exactly what I want the coin to look like, I will also try to get a price quote and type of coin etc. so you know what to expect. Thanks, Legofreak

i don't think the words are going to be what gets you in trouble, if there is trouble, but the image. you may own the ornament, but you don't own the right to make derivitive works of art from the original image. those rights are tightly controlled and do not have much to do with making money - but on the artists' right to control what happens with the original art.

kinda like if i sold you a photo. you own the photo but not the right to reproduce it. you can't take a pic of it and put it on a t-shirt for example for your family reunion without permission.

and then there are "trademarked" items, which are different than copyright.
