outdoors4me
Well I've read some threads on this and still don't really understand it. Is WAAS more accurate? Should it always be enabled? Are there any downsides to enabling it? Thanks, Beck Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Yes, it is more accurate as long as you ar ein the coverage zone (most of the US and Canada), no there are no downsides. Quote Link to comment
+jbar
WAAS makes the the GPS readings more accurate when the reciever can see a WAAS sat. It also increase battery consumption. I always leave it tured on. Anything that makes the signal more accurate is ok. I don't allways get a WAAS correction, can't always see a WAAS sat, but the 60csx tells you with a D in the Sat bars on the sat screen. Quote Link to comment
outdoors4me
Thanks Guys, I enabled WAAS and now I'm seeing D's in almost all the satellite bars. Good stuff! I'll try it out tomorrow. Beck Quote Link to comment
+YBLee
Here is a link to a Garmin website that explains WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) http://www8.garmin.com/aboutGPS/waas.html. Basically it is a system of satellites and ground stations that GPS signal correction. WAAS correction signals come from the "land-based" ground stations. Hope this helps. Quote Link to comment
+EraSeek
Land based stations gather data on delays, send their info to master stations, master stations analyze and produce a modeled grid of corrections, sends that info to the WAAS sats, WAAS sat sends that info to your gPS, your GPS selects what corrections to use based on where you are, and corrects the signals of the GPS sats. DGPS is a land based signal. Quote Link to comment
capt caper
WAAS corrections will carry for a while if you loose the signal. It's different then the other data the gps needs to update every 2 secs. So I leave it on all the time.. Quote Link to comment
