+Gammy McP Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 I am very new to geocaching. I don't get your acronyms but I'm working on it. I've been hashing for a while and I've found that the two really go hand in hand. Hashing simply involves more alcohol. Though I suppose some libations could join me on a cache hunt. The beauty of both...er, sports...is that they both involve following clues to find the prize. That prize might be beer or it might be a cache but the real joy it is finding the thing. Both involve getting getting outside and exploring new places, urban or rural. Richmond, VA area folks should keep thier eyes open for some shiggy caches. Shiggy - thick vegetation, streams, etc; especially mud Anyone else here hash? Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Read the page, saw no mention of a GPS being used, so while it may be interesting to some it ain't geocaching! Could be an interesting way to build a multi-cache though. Quote
+Gammy McP Posted January 8, 2008 Author Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) Thanks for the link. Sorry to repost. I wasn't suggesting combining anything. I was just thinking like minded adults might enjoy both. Edited January 8, 2008 by Gammy McP Quote

Don't be sorry for the repost. My link was years old. I just thought it would be useful to introduce the prior discussion. Quote
+Gammy McP Posted January 8, 2008 Author Posted January 8, 2008 (edited) After reading through that last thread one thing stood out. Geocaching is a family friendly sport. I can see that and if I had a family I would probably bring them along. Hashing generally is not family friendly. In part, that hashing can't be family friendly is a misconception . The Over the Hump Hash (DC Area) has a family friendly trail on Sundays. You will see strollers and children there and responsible driking if any. Family friendly hashes are not common but they do exist. It is an 21+ event. We've found caches on trail without a GPS or any knowledge that they were there. Interestingly, people are starting to bring their GPSs on trail to mark the tracks or just because they are stat geeks. We were talking about geocaching on the last trail and 4 people said they had done it and would like to get into it more. Red dress runs aside, there are a lot of similarities. +Ambrosia Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Reading the Hashing description reminded me a teeny bit of Critical Mass. Especially the drinking part. Quote
+edscott Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 Some common components exist and might attract some of the same people... My main sport.. Orienteering is in a similar position as is Adventure Racing. .. but for me trying to do two activities concurrently lessens both experiences. I'll do a cache or two on my way to an Orienteering meet and a few afterward, but while I am actually Orienteering caching is far from my mind. Quote
+TexasGringo Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 ***I've been hashing for a while*** I stopped when I got out of college...clothes always smelled of smoke. Quote
+MountainRacer Posted January 8, 2008 Posted January 8, 2008 On-on! I've been doing the Hashathon put on by the Rumson Hash House Harriers in Cheesequake Park for a long time, and my dad did it before me. Great times. Quote
+team moxiepup Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Running with a bellyfull of beer sounds distressingly uncomfortable. Then again... so does just running! Other than that though, sounds like fun! Quote
+briansnat Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Nothing keeping you from sucking down a few cold ones after a cache hunt - or even during it if local laws allow. Perhaps we can combine sports into Geohashing Quote
Uberquandary Posted January 9, 2008 Posted January 9, 2008 Reminds me of the Basic Boulder Marathon... I think I've hashed before, although it's normally on hikes. Altitude + Alcohol + Long hike back to the car with similarly disposed friends makes for a good time. I've found caches in that state, too... Quote
