First timer GPS unit?

Recommended Posts

My brother is asking for advice:

Is Magellan Explorist 100 GPS receiver ok? Pretty inexpensive but maybe ok for first timer?

I am a Garmin user and do not know the Magellon line of products, but he wishes to start geocaching on a budget.

My advice for the best budget gps would be to buy a second hand eTrex Venture from eBay for about $60 -$70. You should be able to get one in mint condition pretty easily.

This is a basic gps without mapping. It's better than the basic yellow garmin which is rubbish because of the incredibly difficult unuserfriendly method of naming waypoints that you mark in the field. It has the hi res screen and 'click stick'.

Was thinking Garmin myself, then found an eXplorist 100 at a close out price of $35 at Wal Mart. Couldn't resist that for a starter GPS, and so far I'm delighted with its' performance. Manual loading of coords and no maps, but that's OK for now; gives me a back up unit whenever I upgrade.

Might want to check your local Wal Mart!

my first gps was a Mag 210 - its connects to the comp for downloading coor. Easy to learn to operate - so if your bro sees a 210 - that may be a good choice for him as well. (Miragee always has sound advice - so you may want to consider her post - though I don't know anything about Garmin's).

I have a Magellan 315. They sell regularly on ebay for $30-$40. It is a bit clunky and the manual entry of coordinates gets quicker as you use it. It has been really accurate so far, seems to pull a good signal even in the woods and I love the fact that it averages when I am standing still.

I have not used a newer GPSr, so I don't know what I am missing...
