+Team Zip
I have just bought a Topo map to my Explorist 500. Nice detail and great for geocaching. But when I try to use the map in the car the unit gets incredibly slow. The position on the map is always about 100m behind. The unit can't keep up the map rendering when moving faster than walking. The hourglass keep coming up also. Anyone else having this problem too or is there something wrong with my unit. Or maybe the SD card is slow. What do you think? Quote Link to comment

I had the same problem with my topo maps and what i had found is that I had forgotten to format the SD card in the 500.The card contained all of my maps and the 500 read the info but boy was it slow.So I saved all my maps to my pc and formatted the card in the 500 and all is well! Good luck! Quote Link to comment

Good luck! Can you really do that? When I copied my map to my pc and then moved it to another SD card the eXplorist didn't allow the map to be used in the unit. It seems that the Topo map is locked to the specific card that it came with when buying it. Will not the same thing happen if I format the card in the 500 and copy the map back? I'm not sure that I dare trying. Quote Link to comment

I'm not sure that I dare trying. The general case for Topo3D and DirectRoute is that the *files* are locked to the specific GPS because of the encoded serial number, but any *SD card* should work. Magellan does sell some software on the SD card itself (BlueNAV? I'm not sure since I never had any of them.) I would not be surprised if those are locked to the card; but I am unsure if they are locked to a GPS as well. So if you bought a package that included an SD card, there shouldn't be anything special about it. Usually the kind of error that leads to an unusable file is a data entry error in the serial number at compilation. I haven't heard about reformatting a card speeding up access. Perhaps it has to do with badly fragmented files over time. It sounds like it's worth a try; doesn't cost anything. But notice that I'm using the word "should" a lot above. If you have another card to play with, you ought to verify my theories before burning any bridges behind you. Quote Link to comment
Hiker2008
I don't think its the card. Try reducing the detail in Map Setting -- especially if you are zoomed out and showing all those contour lines. Quote Link to comment
+Team Zip
I don't think its the card. Try reducing the detail in Map Setting -- especially if you are zoomed out and showing all those contour lines. I did som tests and reducing the map detail to "lowest" didn't do any difference. Whats weird is that zooming out makes it work better. Zooming in to the closest will make the unit update the map, and distance to next, very seldom and the map will be very far behind and then jump a very long distance to keep up. It then falls behind again. I said that it works to walk but I discovered yesterday that that's not true either. The same thing happens when walking but not that extreme. Turning the detail map of and just using the Basemap will work perfectly. Smooth scrolling of the map all the time. The way that I would like it to work with my expensive detail map. Is my eXplorist 500 defective or is this the way it's suppose to work? Quote Link to comment
Hiker2008
Do you get the same type of response when you Pan the screen? I guess maybe a format is in order? Or a call to Garmin? Quote Link to comment

Yes, the same thing happens when panning. It's an eXplorist, so I guess I'll call Magellan tomorrow ;-) Thanks. Quote Link to comment
+embra
How large is the map file? Quote Link to comment
+Cornix
Disable the contour lines before exporting the maps in MapSend. Set the map orientation on your unit to "North up". Cornix Quote Link to comment
+Team Zip
I called Magellan today and they said that there's something wrong with the unit. They have had a few others with the same fault. I will send it in and wait for it to return. Quote Link to comment
