problems with downloading

It seems when I download a group of caches , GSAK data base is missing info like last found and date. When I download an individual cache and click on gpx more info comes up on the spreadsheet. I have tried to read other topics but getting deeper in trouble. Please help, I just found my first cache last week.

Are you downloading the .loc file or are you batch downloading the gpx file? The loc file has very limited 411 on the cache while the GPX has pert much evrthang. Try downloading as a pocket query.

I just downloaded 60 caches to gsak. finally they all came up on gsak spread sheet. however, I think they are in loc instead of gpx. How do I get tese catches to gpx.

thanks Tallyho22

I just looked at my email and download PQ and the 60 caches were on the gsak spreadsheet. That was so great to see after days of trying. However i have been trying to download to my gps and now having problems. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. I have an explorist 500.

Thanks Tallyho22

I'm using the 210 but I think it goes the same way.

1) Connect the GPS to the computer and turn on

2) Make sure the GPS shows up in your My Computer

3) Select the caches you want.

4) Go to FILE->Export->Magellan Explorist or SD card

5) Select the GEOCACHES folder on your explorist

6) I always check to make sure it worked. Hasn't failed yet.

Thanks for the info. Tried but it seems that I can not transfer the info from gsak to gps. When I go to my computer and removable E which is the gps and click on geocahes I do not see the new file from GSAK.

I would greatly appreciate any ideas.

I did ittttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt. Now after hours of trying I can now appreciate the explorist 500 with hints downloaded. I do not need paper with info when walking on the trails. However, some hints do not show on the screen but the majority show up when I click on hints. Any ideas why all the hints do not show. I know these caches have hints by going to the actual page. This made my day.

Your Explorist will not import more than 200 geocaches and will truncate hints with more than 200 characters. So I assume that when you say hints are not showing you mean hints are not fully there. It's a limitation of the GPS unit, nothing you can do about it.

If you want, you can edit hints in GSAK before you export data to the Explorist. Perhaps you may simplify those longer hints so they can be less than 200 characters. But this is only functional if you are preparing a short batch of Geocaches. It won't be an option, I believe, if you are working with a long 200 group of geocaches.

I wish the POI files were like Torgut explained! Geocache POIs (.gs file) are limited to 200 caches as stated, but the hint will be truncated after 20 characters. If we could get 200 characters in the hint, it would be great.

Regular POI files (.upt) can hold 500 caches or points, but only the first 200 can have something in the comment field.

My first thought was that tallyho might not be using the Geocache POIs, but they said they are clicking on the Hints button, which only appears when using a Geocache POI file.

Hummm... I'm a complete newbie in Explorists but for sure they show more 20 characters on hints. I had that idea and just grabbed mine to take a second look. Here is a hint of a Geocache, copied of my Explorist:

PT - 20m a Sul da ponte escada acimaENG - 20 - sou

That makes 38 characters not considering spaces or 49 with spaces. Obviously I had kept a wrong (and optimistic) number of 200 but things are not so bad as 20.

I downloaded 132 caches and about 50% have hints info attach to them. I feel great that I can do that.

But was wondering why more did not show more of the hints. If you go to the individual cache page you will find the hint info.

thanks for any info on this. I like the explorist even more now that I am getting to know more how to transfer data to it rather than bringing along paper notes.

Sorry, my mistake. I did a search of the forum and from what I can find, it looks like the hint is limited to 50 characters. Most of the hints I have looked at are much shorter than that, so I have rarely hit against the 50 character limit.

Tallyho, can you give us a GC code for a cache (or caches) you are having problems viewing the hint?

Because I have 7 files on the SD card do you think that this excede 200 caches and a lot of the hints do not show up. If the cache page has a hint, should the hint show up. How do I delete the 6 files I do not need. Would this help. Also I have gsak on my laptop and would like to download it on my large computer but everytime I go to register it shows up as a new regis. No place for my name or serial number. Did go to thr help-contents-register but can not find the correct screen. any ideas.

you can have as many files on your sd card as you want just keep them to 200 caches or less, I just counted my geocache files and have 23 on the sd card, and all of them are between 150 and 200 caches.

The only time hints don't show up for me is if there is no hint ;)

I found how to delete six of the seven. now I have one file of 132 caches. However, there is quite alot that does not have hints attached. I think the majority should because on the cache page they do have a hint attached

I think what you should do is try asking at the GSAK forums. Your problem may be an explorist problem but I don't think so, I've had my 500 for about 18 months and have found over 1000 caches with it and have not seen the problem your experiencing.

It possibly may be some way you have GSAK set up, whatever it is it's an odd happening. One think to check is see if you have ver. 5.203 on your 500 I think thats the latest firmware available. Good luck ;)

Vagabond do the majority of your hints come up with the hint info. I am down to one file with 132. I might try another PQ to see what happens. I too do not think it is the explorist. tallyho22

I go to menu, then poi's, then geocaches, then position, then to the cache I want the hint for, then that page gives me all the info of the cache.

Or if you have a cache in your goto you can hit goto again and scan down to cache info

I move the cursor and press arrow and all info comes up about that cache. I do get hint info on caches but not the majority. I think it is in the gsak. Thanks for ur info because it list caches in alphabetical order. I did not know that.

Vagabond,

If you use GSAK, could you please tell what info you have in the geocache description boxes.

I too am feeling QUITE inferior intellectually because I cannot get files to download to my GPS. All files are showing in GSAK in my removable disk for the GPS unit. When I export them, it shows that they go to my GPS, but they are not there. When I repeat the process, it says that they already exist, but they haven't transferred. I have been trying to get files to the GPS for an entire week with no luck. I have reread this thread over 20 times to see what I may be missing, but I have yet to experience the thrill of them appearing on my GPS unit as of yet. This is a LOUD plea for HELP!!!
