  1. Hello to all my fellow Cacher's in the great Pacific Northwest. I am posting to ask for your help. I am going to be in Seattle over the weekend just before the 4th of July and I would like to know your opinions as to the best area to cache in? I only have about one day to cache in and I really want to hit some good spots. I really prefer a wilderness setting and the wilder the better. But, I don't mind a more civilized are if there are a lot of good caches. Let me know what you think and I'll be up to visit in June/July
  2. "Minding my own dang business, same as you should be doing!" Please note though, I am 6'3 and 220lbs so I can usually get away with it. but I wouldn't recommend it on a regular basis. But, I also believe in what I call Cacherflage to prevent them from even asking. Wear a baseball cap with a corporate logo (Preferably an obscure one and one that doesn't say what the company actually does), cargo pants, a name badge shirt(Check goodwill they usually have some) and carry a metal clip board and if possible, and ID badge. Believe me, no-one will bother you at all.
  3. Just wanted to let you all know. Amazon has the Explorist 500 for about $165. I just picked one up. I suspect, however, that this price drop is a prelude to either a discontinuation of the line or, hopefully, the release of next years models.
  4. I'm using the 210 but I think it goes the same way. 1) Connect the GPS to the computer and turn on 2) Make sure the GPS shows up in your My Computer 3) Select the caches you want. 4) Go to FILE->Export->Magellan Explorist or SD card 5) Select the GEOCACHES folder on your explorist 6) I always check to make sure it worked. Hasn't failed yet.
  5. Are you downloading the .loc file or are you batch downloading the gpx file? The loc file has very limited 411 on the cache while the GPX has pert much evrthang. Try downloading as a pocket query.
  6. OK, So I have been using the Magellan Explorist 210 for quite a while now and I have found it to be tough, accurate and reliable. The only real gripe I have is that it doesn't do Projection. I am thinking about picking up the explorist 500 as Amazon has a good deal on one but here is what I want to know: Is there a good GPS for $200-$300 that not only does everything the Explorist 500 does but can also store the cache description and the full hint? The Explorist series only gives you 50 characters of the hint and doesn't have the capability to store the cache description even with the SD card. I don't want to use a PDA as I know I will destroy it in about 1 week. Is there another option?
  7. I have the 210, it has been an excellent first GPS for me. The only two things I would fault it for is that it cuts off the hint at 50 characters which is no big deal. However, the second thing is that it doesn't do projection. This is a HUGE deal for geocaching. Look at the Explorist 400. I am planning to by one later in the month simply for the projection.
  8. Yup, Same here. I notice that they have a new login page maybe that's the problem? I am logged in everywhere else but on the google maps page, really annoying.
  9. GAH~ Just my luck. I guess if Magellan doesn't update, and it looks like they aren't going to. I either need to get a new GPS or find a good map and a compas. Thanks for the help.
  10. OK, I have no idea how to do this and I am wanting to get some advice from more experienced cachers. Occasionally I will run across a puzzle cache or a multi cache that says something like "1.2 miles away on a heading of 123". I can figure out how to do this with my compas and just walking, but is there any way to input this in my GPS so that it comes up as a waypoint that I can follow to? I.E. instead of entering Lat&Long, Can I just say 1.2 miles at a heading of 123 from either x location or my current location? Again, I am using a magellan explorist 210. If this unit won't do it, what is a better GPS that will?
  11. Explorist 310 Yup, I see em pretty regular and I almost took it back because of them but the unit works great and this post makes me feel a bit better
  12. Yeesh I hate spiders. When I was working as a courier in Houston I got bit by something while I was napping in front of Chase Tower I have no idea what bit me but it never hurt, didn't rot my forearm and never even turned black or bruised or anything. But, my left forearm looked like there was a golf ball under the skin for about a week and there were two little puncture marks about 2mm apart. Really glad I didn't see the dadgum thing as I would have gone nuts.
  13. So I am looking for some difficult Caches in my area and my Pocket query comes up with a few 4/4 and a few 5/5s in my general vicinity. As I am reading through them one of the 5/5 cache's looks like the only real impediment is a swim/boat ride out to what is a fairly obvios stash place. Some of the others seem really straight forward except they mostly include boating/swimming a short distance. This weekend I was seeking two ot three caches that were rated 1-3 with only one having a terrain rating of 3 and all the rest being 2.5 or lower. So the question I Have is this: What cache's do you think were way overstarred on the terrain/difficulty and what cache's were way under starred? What was you biggest dissapointment? the cache that you thought was going to be an ultra challenge but turned out to be way too easy. And what Cache almost killed you when you foolishy approached a 4.5 terrain that was rated 1?
  14. Yup. I was set up for something called GRB36. How this happened I have no idea. I will go out in a few hours to double check that it works.
  15. In my Magellan manual it states that Waypoints and POI's are the same thing and says that the two terms may be used interchangably.
  16. Thanks BlueDeuce that's kinda what I thought but I wanted to make sure I wasn't screwing something up.
  17. OK, so this is probably a really dumb question that only exposes my ignorance but I am going to ask it anyway. I just got my Explorist 210 unit and I have enjoyed using it but it doesn't seem to be accurate to more than around 20-30 feet. is this just a function of my own ignorance or is this typical? Is the cahce possibly not in the exact spot? I have tried walking a circle around the area and this seems to help narrow it down but I am still off by quite a bit. Again, is this typical or am I just dumb?
  18. Hmmm, I'll have to check that when I get home today. The distance and Direction seems about right. I have a fix using easyGPS but I would prefer to use the magellan software as my Geocache's actually shuw up as Geocaches. Thanks for the tip, I'll let you know if it works.
  19. Yup, I killed all the files on the GPS unit itself and then tried reinstalling them and it still does the exact same thing.
  20. I am having a problem with the Magellan Geocache Manager software and I am wondering if any of you may have had this problem. I am using the software with an explorist 210. If I either put my waypoints in manually or use EasyGPS, I have no problem, the compass takes me right there. But, If I put in my waypoints or POI's with the Magellan software, the cache appears in the correct spot on the map, I appear on the correct spot on the map, but the compass now points about 1/3 of a mile away in an apparently random direction. If I go to the map view, I can see the cache right there, I can see me standing on top of it, but the little guide path says I am still around .29 of a mile away. I found this to be INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING. Anyone have any Ideas? This software looks pretty basic but it does some things that I like so If I could fix it I would like to do so.
