  1. I guess I will ask for one more stroke in the beating of this horse. I just got a new computer and I am in the process of loading all of the programs when I came across this issue. I am greatly dismayed at this decision since I too used the function extensively to plan caching adventures both large and small. The mothership doesn't offer anything comparable, in my opinion. As with most business decisions, we as the "little people" aren't really consulted when the decisions are made. In looking through this thread, I believe that all 200 users of that function, including myself, have voiced their opinions here. What are the odds of that?!?! Seriously though, I think this feature should come back. I have often lamented the lag time in loading MANY things on the site and I have cursed Jeremy for not upgrading his servers. I often ask what my $30 goes towards. There are alot of premium members who wish for this feature to come back just as I do. And like others before me, I feel that the system should be improved not pared to reduce demand. I honestly don't know what I will use in it's place. It won't be the GC maps. It will be adding several steps to the system that I have grown accustomed to. I am actually shocked that I haven't noticed this or heard about it sooner. I guess the lights have not gone out completely. It was a valuable tool in planning my geocaching. My family may applaud it's demise; but I am mourning the loss.
  2. A while ago I used your posts to configure macros to export caches to my Nuvi 660. After some minor, technical difficulties, I was able to get it to work and I was ecstatic. I went back to load more into my Garmin and got the following error: App: POILoader At: 10/16/2008 2:49:24 PM (UTC) OS: Windows XP Service Pack 2 Processor: x86, Processor Level: 15, Processors:1, Model: 3 Stepping: 4, RAM: 1276336 APPLICATION.CPP-258-2.5.2.0 invalid string position. I contacted Garmin and their response was: There appears to be a conflict in the application. If you have not created or downloaded .csv files from a third party web site to load into the unit, then the POI loader has nothing to see to load. The POI loader is only an application, the needed files have to be created as a .csv file following the suggested format of the help example. If you have created or downloaded a .csv file and the unit itself is being recognized by the POI loader, and the file is being seen, but this error comes up while accessing or trying to load the file, then something in the file may be corrupt or not in the correct format. I went back and deleted my previous POI loader and reinstalled from your link. I configured a new macro...etc. After everything I did, I still get the same error and I am frustrated at the lack of success that I once had. Is there something that I am either not doing, or doing incorrectly? I know it was only a matter of clicking buttons the last time once everything was set up.
  3. I have not changed or gotten a new computer. Both my home & work computers are experiencing this issue? What has to be done to fix it?
  4. I am not sure that I am doing it ENTIRELY correctly, but I was able to load a couple of GSAK databases onto my Nuvi 660. This looks to be so TOTALLY awesome that I can't begin to say how excited I am to try it out this weekend. Combining this with my Palm Pilot is like the ultimate, paperless geocaching experience (I hope!) I will come back to try the various patches after this weekend. I am so glad that I finally got it to work that I am too eager to try it and I don't want to risk screwing it up!!
  5. I have a different problem, and yes, I am somewhat computer illeterate. I think I followed the directions correctly throughout. I got to wher it said that 41 points were added to my unit (Nuvi 660). When I go to custom poi's, it says "no matches found". Did I forget a step or miss something obvious? I have reread the thread several times and I cannot get these poi's on my unit. I am very excited to try this out, but I am growing increasingly frustrated in what I believe to be my own stupidity.
  6. I can't offer any specific help on the matter, but I can tell you that while crawling around looking for a cache this weekend, I cracked the screen on my eXplorist 500 in 2 places and rendered it unusable for the rest of the day. Fortunately, I was with someone else and we used her GPS for the rest of the day. Anyway, I called Magellan and have since sent my unit back for repairs. They are going to replace the screen for $56. I guess that's not too bad, I was figuring that I was going to have to buy a whole new unit.
  7. I am using v6.6.3 and I am getting an error on line 263; which is: "if $LatVal> $BOTTOM_OF_PA AND $LatVal < 40" I have virtually NO intelligence when it comes to computer programming, so if this is even remotely more technical than typing something in that line, I am doomed. Any help anyone??
  8. When I find coins, I notice alot of them have, for lack of a better description, a mission statement describing the coin as well as it's mission. Is there a template out there somewhere that I can fill in specifics and print out? Alot of these "statements" look very similar which is why I ask about a template of some sort. Thanks for any & all help. Mike
  9. Well, I am only 1 behind you. I hoope that I don't catch up. My fear is I will. I am currently using a friend's 60 cS and I HATE it!! I really like my eXplorist.
  10. Thanks for all of the insight everyone. I do not have the equipment or the skills to use a voltmeter and check polarity...blah, blah,blah... I am just a geocaching addict. To answer a previous question, my other unit was also an eXplorist 500. I sent Magellan the cables even though they said they didn't want them (at least I think that is what he said) I don't have the confidence to use it again anyway, so if it doesn't come back I won't be too bent out of shape. I can always go buy a Pelican at Wal*Mart. If I have my GPS back then, I can pick a Wal*Mart that I haven't been to before and probably get a new geocache out of it.
  11. I did not buy the charger from Magellan, but I am plugging it into the USB adapter cable that came with my unit. I don't know how you tell if it is "after market". None of my cables that came with the unit are marked with anything.
  12. The car adapter connects into the female part of the Magellan adapter. I take out the wall adapter cord and plug this in it's place. I will say this, I unscrewed the battery cover and there is a small spot where it looks like the plastic melted next to the metal portion of where the screw holds the backplate on. Now I didn't notice this when I got it a week ago, but I didn't study it when I put my SD card back in either. It just seems weird that 2 units have both gone completely dead while using this charger. I have used it successfully on my previous unit, so I am baffled at this point.
  13. OK, my initial eXplorist 500 died completely about a month ago. I was charging it with the car adaptor and it wouldn't turn on AT ALL. After contacting Customer Support (not a pleasant experience) I sent the unit back. I'll avoid all of the trivial stuff that happened along the way, however yesterday I plugged the replacement unit into the car charger after only using it a total of 2 hours, and this one is DEAD the exact same way as the first unit. Magellan is supposedly sending me shipping forms to send back at their expense, but I am wondering if anyone has heard of this happening. I've checked the archives and didn't see anything.
  14. I too am feeling QUITE inferior intellectually because I cannot get files to download to my GPS. All files are showing in GSAK in my removable disk for the GPS unit. When I export them, it shows that they go to my GPS, but they are not there. When I repeat the process, it says that they already exist, but they haven't transferred. I have been trying to get files to the GPS for an entire week with no luck. I have reread this thread over 20 times to see what I may be missing, but I have yet to experience the thrill of them appearing on my GPS unit as of yet. This is a LOUD plea for HELP!!!
  15. Well, I will again drop my pair of Lincolns on this terminated equine; I have only 1 coin released in the wild. I did it with the full expectation that I may never see it again. I enjoy collecting the icons. I want to see the coin, not a copy. However, I do not begrudge a coin owner for making the copy. I haven't come across any of these yet. I will probably move it alongif and when I find one. I do like the idea of having it say copy in the title so I can decide if I want to go get the copy of the coin rather than the actual coin itself. I do not chastise people for not playing the game the way I do. What infuriates me are the thieves that are among us. These, for the most part, are people who know how to play this game and capitalize on those of us that will leave something of value (our coin) and simply take it for their own use/enjoyment. Whatever interpretation of the rules of the game that you have, that's just plain stealing. But if you have any knowledge of this game and it's thousands of participants, you have to expect it as being part of the game; albeit an unacceptable and unwanted part of the game....and now after pausing for a moment for dramatic effect, I step down from my soap box and return to my seat amidst thunderous applause.
  16. I would LOVE that...........that Schuylkill Geocachers coin is AWESOME looking !!
  17. I went to college in Marietta. The zip code is 45750...not too many caches near there I discovered.
  18. I have looked through the posts and didn't see where I could find blank log sheets anywhere. I am sure some of the veterans here can quickly help me. I am looking to shamelessly capitalize on the work of others by asking where I might find blank logs that I can print out. It may be worth mentioning that I plan to carry these with me so I may "reload" a cache where the current log might be full so the owner doesn't have to waste time on a maintenance run. I guess that makes this request less shameless. Thanks for any and all help.
  19. I know that opinions are like....noses; we all have one, so here's mine--- I enjoy collecting the icons associated with geocoins. I did record a few at an event, but felt that they were somewhat "tainted" since I didn't really "find" them. I have been known to go to a cache just because a coin is shown as residing there. I try to trade a coin for a coin when I do that and I also try to get the coin back in circulation quickly because I know others do the same thing. On that note, it infuriates me when I go to a cache that shows having a coin there and then it isn't there. That is theft. Whether you view it as being brought on yourself or you say that you relinquished ownership when you released the coin or whatever viewpoint you have, it boils down to somebody "Playing dirty pool" as my grandmother used to say (I am chuckling as I recall that memory) I don't like that people have to resort to placing tags on their coins. I agree that it defaces them. Most coins disappear because people that know the rules (the rules of decency and fair play, not just the "unofficial" rules of our game) simply take them. That is what angers me the most. Somebody who knows the rules simply purloins the coin. Granted, a small percentage are muggled, but let's face it, I have DNF'd my share of 1 star hides, how many caches are really stumbled upon by unassuming muggles and just the geocoins are taken with the cache and the remainder of it's contents being rehidden? I have a small number of coins that I am hesitating in releasing them as I fear that they will be money that I spent for someone to add to their coin collection. Will they have an asterisk next to the coin saying that "this coin really belongs to The Peanuts, but I STOLE it from a cache and now I have it forever"? Probably not. If I do release any of my coins, I hope that they can be enjoyed by as many others that enjoy getting another icon for their collection, but I am fully prepared for their journeys to be cut short by some dirty pool player!
  20. I tried to email sepagcoin@gmail.com the other day to order 2 coins, but the email bounced back to me as unrecognized. How can we order the coins now if we didn't order them before this whole PayPal fiasco?
  21. I have 2 coins that I am interested in trading, neither of them are trackable so I am unsure of their value here. I bought them on ebay before I really knew wht geocoins were about. My desire now is to see if anyone would be willing to trade any trackable coins for these. The first is a Hurricane Katrina Relief 2005 coin and the other has "Wanna Go?" on the front with June 6, 2004 and on the back it says "Why don't you just take a hike". It is numbered, but not trackable. I would like to trade for a Moun10bike coin (JUST KIDDING - I am not THAT DUMB!!) I am just curious to see if I can trade them for something that will add an icon to my profile. Thanks for any and all responses.
  22. I hope this is the correct forum. If not please steer me to it. I have a cache where there are 4 waypoints out of 5 that I want to see plotted so that I can identify the 5th. I have an explorist 100 so I don't have anything fancy to do this with. Is there somewhere in cyberspace that I can do this? Thanks for any & all help.
  23. I can safely say that I don't have to worry about this happening to my children, as they are constantly running with scissors to hurry and go play in traffic. As I remove my tongue from my cheek I will agree that just because someone can reproduce, it doesn't mean that they are automatically a qualified parent. There are many children out there who have these people; who are as dumb as a bag of hammers; as parental units. It's unfortunate, and I would love nothing more than to be able to smack the crap out of them when I see a child suffering because of their ineptitude. However, the laws of this great land of ours prevents me from doing that (if I get caught, mind you). It can never hurt if we as responsible adults keep a watchful eye on any and every child no matter whom they belong to. And remember; if their rock headed parent tells you to mind your own business, just apologize and offer them a Reebok candy bracelet ! Just tell them it's beer flavored... grown ups only.
  24. In my backpack I have some grocery bags to help with my CITO efforts. What I am really looking for is one of those sticks with the point on the end to help p/u trash. I have found something called the "litter stabber". I am wondering if there is anything out there along these lines that is collapsible that would fit in my pack until it is needed. Has anyone seen anything like this?
