RoxyAnne Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I took a picture of the general area of a geocache. It did not show the geocache itself, but could lead someone there if they were paying attention or couldn't find it. Are there rules about taking pitures of the cache areas that I should know about? Thanks Quote
denali7 Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 On most of my caches I've put some thought and work into the camo and the exact placement. Pictures are fine with me, but NOT ones that show the hiding place or the cache container. At first I didn't realize people would actually post such pictures of an obviously camoflaged container, but after I realized they would I edited my cache pages requesting that such pictures not be added to the cachelog. Scenery, parking area, and general pictures are fine, but many hiders would rather not have their hide compromised by pictures of GZ ("Ground Zero"). Happy Caching! Quote
Prime Suspect Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Pictures of the general area are fine. You're not telling them anything their GPS won't. Of course, that's assuming it's a Traditional cache. Puzzles & Multis? Best to not show anything that would identify the area. Quote
briansnat Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 There are no actual rules, but there out of courtesy you should not show the cache in its hiding place or anything that will narrow down the search area. I think most geocachers are OK with photos of the cache itself as long as its not a specially camoed container. If you've seen one ammo box you've seen them all, so I don't see an issue with photographing those kinds of caches, but if the cache is in something like a pine cone, acorn, fake bolt, fake rock, etc... I think posting photos would be inappropriate. Quote
Tsmola Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I've had people post photos of the container before, but they weren't hides that were meant to be especially difficult so I didn't mind. Personally I love it when someone uploads photos to the cache page, it just shows they truely did enjoy your hide because they took the extra time to take photos and then share them with the world on the cache page. +Ambrosia Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Post as many pictures as possible, as long as it doesn't give away the hiding place! Pictures are good. Quote
Moose Mob Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Pictures are usually welcome unless the hider says otherwise. Here an example Quote
TeamHarrison Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I've photographed some non-camo'd containters at seldom-visited caches and the owners were appreciative to see the condition of the cache. I've also photographed terrain around some caches, but not GZ specifically, and have also gotten positive feedback from owners stating that the conditions around the cache have changes signinificantly and they wouldn't have otherwise known. Granted, most of these occasions have occured on seldom-visited and more difficult to reach caches. I say don't give away the exact hide location or container if camo'd, but otherwise, snap away... +Bad_CRC Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 I added a picture of a cache we found yesterday and it clearly shows the ground zero spot. I don't think it will be a problem though. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...81-d56b9405d209 Quote
RoxyAnne Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 I think my picture is ok then. Thanks for the input! It didn't show the cache or anything that you couldn't see just being at the waypoint. I felt it might be leading because there were a lot of logs saying they couldn't find this one, and the picture was in the general area. It was well hidden, but in the open. Great cache. Quote
Prime Suspect Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Pictures are usually welcome unless the hider says otherwise. Here an example I always wondered what happened to DB Cooper. Quote
