Firth of Forth
I'm helping someone with an article about geocaching in Scotland. Is there a way to find out how many caches there are in Scotland using a database of all of the UK caches on GSAK? And is there any way of finding out at what rate they have been increasing (ie being placed) in Scotland? Edited September 12, 2006 by Firth of Forth Quote Link to comment
rutson
Stats? Someone mention stats? I reckon there are 1737 active caches in Scotland. What level of detail do you want for the placements dates, Sally? Quote Link to comment
Firth of Forth
Brilliant! Wonder how you did that??! As for the rate of increase, just a rough estimate will do I think. Any idea how many cachers there are in Scotland?? I reckon there's no way of finding that out! Quote Link to comment
rutson
Sorry! Information overload I know, but I could do this very quickly: Placed by Month for Database: Scotland Year/Month placed Cummulative 200012 1 1 200101 1 2 200102 1 3 200103 2 5 200104 1 6 200105 0 6 200106 2 8 200107 3 11 200108 0 11 200109 3 14 200110 3 17 200111 2 19 200112 2 21 200201 4 25 200202 2 27 200203 8 35 200204 3 38 200205 10 48 200206 11 59 200207 16 75 200208 10 85 200209 11 96 200210 7 103 200211 10 113 200212 6 119 200301 21 140 200302 11 151 200303 15 166 200304 17 183 200305 17 200 200306 9 209 200307 11 220 200308 7 227 200309 12 239 200310 17 256 200311 7 263 200312 18 281 200401 12 293 200402 17 310 200403 15 325 200404 30 355 200405 33 388 200406 29 417 200407 26 443 200408 33 476 200409 16 492 200410 29 521 200411 18 539 200412 24 563 200501 11 574 200502 25 599 200503 41 640 200504 71 711 200505 62 773 200506 45 818 200507 41 859 200508 58 917 200509 38 955 200510 58 1013 200511 41 1054 200512 37 1091 200601 91 1182 200602 97 1279 200603 96 1375 200604 150 1525 200605 89 1614 200606 54 1668 200607 89 1757 200608 90 1847 200609 106 1953 Totals 1953 Caveat: This is based on my personal database and will not include ALL archived caches, but I think it should be within 10 or so percent of the correct figures. +rutson
As for number of cachers, that's tricky. What I CAN tell you, is that caches have been placed in Scotland by teams with 325 different owner IDs. The top 20 or so are listed here: perth pathfinders 168 8.60% Perthshire Cachers 161 8.24% Team Clova 159 8.14% allieballie 78 3.99% BTwigger 54 2.76% ghiribizzo 53 2.71% Gruff and Arianne 47 2.40% McKryton 46 2.35% thehaggishunter 42 2.15% Haggis Hunter 37 1.89% Firth of Forth 36 1.84% Pooter 35 1.79% marmal 32 1.63% Jack Aubrey 30 1.53% HighlandNick 29 1.48% Sssmokin!! & Mr Rhu 25 1.28% Scotsbob 22 1.12% Crieff Highlanders 20 1.02% Naefearjustbeer + Caitlin 19 0.97% Cookster 19 0.97% Quote Link to comment
Haggis Hunter
That is quite impressive Ian. It appears as though you have got Snaik listed as the Perthshire Cachers? As they don't exist but Snaik does and he has hidden 161 caches. Quote Link to comment
rutson
Oh come on! I never said the information was perfect, I'm just trying to help someone out here. According to my database "The Perthshire Cachers" placed this cache, so I'm assuming snaik posted it under his/her account. I gotta pick a name from somewhere at it just so happens this was it. Anyway, to continue... In my Database (caveats as before), there have been 30019 finds on Scottish caches, by a total of 2308 user IDs. Obviously this includes visitors, like me But I hope that gives you some sort of idea Sally. Edit: ACTUALLY caveats rathermore than before as I'm very short of early logs on popular caches, so that data should be taken with a LARGE pinch of salt Edited September 13, 2006 by rutson Quote Link to comment
Haggis Hunter
What a coincidence, whilst looking at this thread a reporter from the Edinburgh Evening News called me and asked me about how caching has grown in Edinburgh, I used this thread as a guide. Why was the newspaper calling me out of the blue? I hear you say! They are coming to this event on Friday. Quote Link to comment
Firth of Forth
Wow!! Thanks a lot Rutson! Is it very boring in China?? Quote Link to comment
mollyjak
That's impressive. When you get bored again you could always do the same for Wales please. I would find it very interesting but haven't a clue how to do it. Quote Link to comment
Write and Mane
Supporting Mollyjak's request, yes please, pretty please, would love one for Wales. Having placed a few around Cardiff and Caerphilly we would love to see how it looks! Edited September 14, 2006 by Write and Mane Quote Link to comment
