Release Date For City Navigator North America Ver 8?

Recommended Posts

Any news on a release date for City Navigator North America Version 8? I just bought a 60MAPCSX and can't find City Nav North America version 7 or 8. It kinda frustrating spending so much money and not being able to purchase the right software.

Can anyone confirm this information:

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

Garmin will give you a free upgrade to City Navigator version 8.0 as soon as it comes out if you purchase City Select 7.0 after June 1, 2006. That way you can use the data TODAY and get the free update in the near future once version 8.0 is available.

I got it from: http://www.gpsdiscount.com/products/index.html?a=507

I'm guessing that when City Navigator 8 comes out, it will be both Windows AND Mac OSX compatible. Remember that on January 6, 2006, Garmin announced that during the Spring of 2006 they would introduce the first Mac OSX compatible software. Well, Spring is almost over and City Navigator should be released shortly.

You heard it here first!

Subjet: City Navigator 8 (North America) upgrade

On May 24, 2006 I purchased a GARMIN 60Csx. The salesman informed me that City Select 7 (North America) was the preferred auto routing software available at that time, but that City Navigator 8 would soon (approximately 1 month) be replacing CS7. Because I needed functional auto routing immediately for a trip, I bought the CS7 software and unlocked it on 5/24/06. My question now is this: When CN8 is released this summer, will I qualify for a free upgrade?

Thanks,

Glenn Wagstaff

Glenn,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. Yes, you qualify for a free update. Just order the update DVD when it is released in the near future (hopefully early to mid July) and then when you go to unlock the maps our system will recognize that you are eligible for a one time free unlock code for version 8.

Please let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for your interest in Garmin.

Regards,

Nathan

I also asked the Garmin Cartography department about the available options and received the following reply:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. City Navigator North America v7 is currently on backorder and I am not sure when the next shipment will come in. With the release of City Navigator North America v8 so close it could be that dealers as well as our warehouse are waiting for the v8 DVD before they begin filling orders (hopefully it will hit shelves in the next few weeks). If you need something now I would recommend looking around on-line to see if another Garmin dealer has v7 or a previous version for sale (it must be brand new and unopened). Your best bet is probably to do a Google or Yahoo search for it. If you do find a brand new version of the software you can purchase it, install and unlock the maps and when our version 8 update is released later this summer you will qualify for a free update. You will just need to order the update DVD from our website and our unlock system will recognize that you are eligible for a free version 8 unlock code. The same deal applies for City Select. If you find an unopened version just purchase it and install the maps and you will qualify for a free upgrade to City Navigator North America v8 when the update DVD comes out. We are discontinuing City Select which is why you get the free upgrade to City Nav. Hope this helps and sorry for the hassles."

Based on this, I went out and ordered City Select from GPSDiscount.com, who seeemed to have a pretty good price on it. The e-mail indicates that the update for CN v8 will be a DVD.

That's the million dollar question. The answer I got from Cartography was still somewhat vague (next few weeks). I ordered City Select v7 through GPSDiscount.com for $110.42 (incl. shipping and insurance) and it's on its way here. Once v8 comes out, I'll get the free upgrade DVD. If I had any autorouting software I'd probably wait, but I've run out of patience and I have a trip coming up.
