  1. I use the compass to show the orientation of the GPS (and from that the cache) when I'm not moving. Enjoy the feature, although I hadn't put it up against the extra cost.
  2. This is the e-mail response I received from Garmin on June 22nd: Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. City Navigator North America v7 is currently on backorder and I am not sure when the next shipment will come in. With the release of City Navigator North America v8 so close it could be that dealers as well as our warehouse are waiting for the v8 DVD before they begin filling orders (hopefully it will hit shelves in the next few weeks). If you need something now I would recommend looking around on-line to see if another Garmin dealer has v7 or a previous version for sale (it must be brand new and unopened). Your best bet is probably to do a Google or Yahoo search for it. If you do find a brand new version of the software you can purchase it, install and unlock the maps and when our version 8 update is released later this summer you will qualify for a free update. You will just need to order the update DVD from our website and our unlock system will recognize that you are eligible for a free version 8 unlock code. The same deal applies for City Select. If you find an unopened version just purchase it and install the maps and you will qualify for a free upgrade to City Navigator North America v8 when the update DVD comes out. We are discontinuing City Select which is why you get the free upgrade to City Nav . Hope this helps and sorry for the hassles. I went ahead and ordered City Select and am now waiting for Garmin to make the update available.
  3. I'm curious. Capt Caper stated that 51 and 48 are in test mode. Can anyone tell us what that means for us? Will the D's be on and off while testing occurs, or will our GPSr's show D's without actually being more accurate? Or will our GPSr's try to use "test" data and be less accurate? After the update, my 76CSx seems to wander less while stationary, but it tracks to the side of roads rather than on them (I only have US Topo at the moment). EPE does seem to have reduced, on average, from 18-20ft to 8-12ft.
  4. What do ya know. After the update, I can now see 51 and a lot of D's. Signal strength on a lot of them were maxed out. It might be my imagination, but it also seem as if the wandering when I'm stationary has diminished. This update seems to have made a huge difference! Thanks Trizumi for the link to the WAAS info.
  5. Could someone list all the WAAS satellites. Are there any available from the Atlanta area? I just bought a 76CSx, but haven't seen the "D" yet.
  6. That's the million dollar question. The answer I got from Cartography was still somewhat vague (next few weeks). I ordered City Select v7 through GPSDiscount.com for $110.42 (incl. shipping and insurance) and it's on its way here. Once v8 comes out, I'll get the free upgrade DVD. If I had any autorouting software I'd probably wait, but I've run out of patience and I have a trip coming up. http://www.gpsdiscount.com/products/index.html?a=507
  7. I also asked the Garmin Cartography department about the available options and received the following reply: "Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. Based on this, I went out and ordered City Select from GPSDiscount.com, who seeemed to have a pretty good price on it. The e-mail indicates that the update for CN v8 will be a DVD.
  8. Thanks Great Scott and Red90 - that helps clarify what was happening. My mistake was assuming that the Trip and Waypoint Manager Map was the same as the basemap loaded on the 76CSx.
  9. I realize that I need to buy and install additional software for the detailed street mapping. I am just looking for the major highways. They show up on the basemap on my PC for North America and Europe, but only show up on the GPSr for North America.
  10. I recently purchased a 76csx and am figuring out how to use it (my first GPSr as well). The unit came loaded with the basemap and came with the Mapsource Trip and Waypoint Manager. When I went to Germany, I realized that although the main highways show up on the PC-based map, they didn't show on my GPS unit (just major cities). I had detail set on high. I had also loaded US Topo and downloaded some section of US Topo onto my unit. How do I get the German highways to show on the GPSr like they do on my PC? Thanks. David
