  1. DNFs are for notifying the owner of the cache that there may be a problem because you looked and looked and couldn't find their cache, and that they may need to go check on their cache. Honestly you logged a DNF on someones cache because of RAIN!!!!!! You didn't even look for it, how lame!!!! Now the poor cache owner is wondering if something is wrong with their cache because you didn't want to get wet! WEAK!!!! If you absolutely had to log something in this case it should have been a note stating " I was a wiener and didn't want to get wet" not a DNF. DNFs aren't to "help you remember those caches you hunted and didn't find" they are meant to tell the owner "you need to check your cache" Another problem is for those that use PDA's for paperless caching and have their recent logs to download to a max of 3 or 4 to save memory then you aren't getting anything usefull from a bunch of DNFs from guys that just decided to give up before they ever looked. How rude to the others that come behind you. IF YOU LOOKED AND LOOKED AND LOOOKED AND DIDN'T FIND THEN DNF IF YOU GAVE UP BECAUSE THE WIFE CALLED, IT RAINED, ETC. LEAVE A NOTE IF ANYTHING!
  2. Personally I am getting really tired of seeing DNFs on caches where the searcher just got tired and gave up. IF YOU DON'T GET TO GROUND ZERO OR DON'T LOOK THEN DON'T DNF! If you are the owner of the cache and you see DNFs it is to alert you that there is a problem. If cachers are logging DNFs without actually getting to the cache site then the owner could be spending a lot of time running out to check on caches that are perfectly fine. From what I am seeing here is that if some of you "hit goto" and get to the parking area and then decide to not even get out of the dang car then you DNF the cache because you already "started the search" what a load of crap! If you don't look for the cache and just feel you HAVE to leave a log then leave a note! Leaving a DNF on a cache that you didn't even look for is just plain rude to the person that hid the cache and is responsible to maintain it. I've seen people leave a DNF on a cache just because it was raining too hard to leave the car. These logs are USELESS! Leave a note! not a DNF!
  3. If individuals like chantrelleman aren't held responsible for their actions then they will continue their behavior. When an individual plain out says in a log they are steeling coins then they should have their account terminated! It isn't a "my word against his" HE STATED RIGHT IN HIS LOG THAT HE IS STEELING COINS! I didn't make this up! Sure coins and bugs get stolen all the time, but the individuals don't fess up to it. Oh WEll that's the way it goes. But when someone admits to steeling what isn't theirs then they shouldn't be allowed in the game.
  4. O.k. then the facts are that this no good jerk is a coin stealer. My concern is that the next coin or bug he decides to steal could be that of a child who's heart will be crushed because their coin or bug they wanted to have travel is stolen. As a group we should not be rolling over and just ignoring people like this. Peer preasure can acomplish a lot. My real frustration is the knowledge that the reality is that Geocaching will probably not do anything about it. It is the same frustration that I get from Ebay as well. Sellers can sell illegal items all day long but as long as Ebay is getting their cut, they don't do a thing about it. Cachers such as Chantrelleman sould have their acounts closed for such behavior.
  5. I just have to wonder how chanterelleman went from just over 200 finds to 444 in less than a week. I think besides steeling coins he is cheating at the game too. I got the standard canned message from Geocaching "we are looking into it" but I suppose that nothing will be done. I think his account should be terminated with great haste!!!
  6. My hope would be that the caching comunity would deluge this guy with email about his actions. Also I hope that a lot of local cachers in the Puget Sound area will see and recognize his name as he seems to attend some of the event caches. If this happens he needs to be told that he isn't welcome in this community if he insists on being a thief! As the coin in question is mine I sure do hope I get a chance to meet this S.O.B. at an event someday! This coin was a gift to me from my wife and never got out of it's first cache. There has been attempts made to contact this person and they are too much of a coward to reply. I have turned in a ticket with Geocaching about the incident as well. As far as I am concerned he doesn't belong in the game if he is this type of person. my .02 worth!!!!!!!!
  7. Go look at the most recent posts for this cache. GCX100 This is an outrage!
  8. I have placed 3 caches now that are always on a favorite Jeep trail, out in the middle of nowhere, not near any railroads or dangerous areas, not on private land and it always takes 3 days for them to be approved. My wife has placed 7 caches, in equally safe areas and hers are always approved in about 14 milliseconds. What gives???? This sucks!!!! What is the hold up???? I usually place caches on a Wednesday and always hope that they will be published by friday so that those going out for the weekend will have a chance to get them. The newest one was placed on Wedneday, submitted on Thursday and still not published as of Saturday night!!! My wife puts one out and it is published about as fast as she can hit the enter key!!!!
  9. Thanks Landrover. Did that, but don't see a way to make GSAK use the symbols that defined as "custom" on the 60cx. Garmin's requirements are that the "custom" icons are named "Waypoint Symbol (000-023).bmp". I still can't associate that to a cache type with Gsak.
  10. O.K. I guess I can't do what I want to do as no one seems to be understading me. I DO NOT want to load any POIs! I use GSAK to load all my geocaches to the 60cx All I want to be able to do is assign them with icons for Multi, Puzzle, Virtual caches so that I can tell the difference on the screen. I thought because there was a provision for "custom icons" in the 60cx that there should be an easy way to upload JUST icons to the unit. I guess this isn't possible. I was hoping to be able to make this as simple a process as possible in that by getting the "geocaching" icons into the unit, then they could be associated when I load new caches with GSAK. Thanks anyway for everyones help.
  11. thanks but the POI loader loads POIs not icons, not least that I can tell. Ximage that I read about in the faqs is to take screen shots of the gps
  12. Does anyone know how to upload custom icons to the Garmin 60cx. There is suposed to be a way but I can't find it. You can add custom icons in mapsource but the actual icons don't upload to the unit when the waypoint is sent.
  13. Checked out MegaGPS and did not find Version 8. Did a search and only came up with "City Navigator North america" No version listed, on SD for $234 bux??? Offroute.com states that CN8 is to be released on June 29th. Therefore if this is true then nobody actually has it "in stock" yet. Their listed price is around $117.00 for the DVD. As I understand things.... Version 6.0 is the last "Full Version" Version 7.0 is only an UPGRADE to version 6.0 and not a full product. Therefore you can't just by version 7.0 and install it if you don't have Version 6.0 installed. Therefore, wait for version 8 to come out. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this. Thanks...
  14. June 29th as far as I have seen, for version 8 You can order it at www.offroute.com I can fix anything, and if I can't fix it, I can fix it so nobody can fix it.
  15. Alright, you all sold me, thanks for all the input. It would seem to me that an open ended question such as "what GPS does the best in cover" would get some fans on both sides of the coin (Magellan/Garmin) but from what I am seeing you all are opting for the Garmin CX series. I thank all for the input and advice. I just ordered the 60CX. Should have it next week sometime and be able to put it to the test on a local hiking trail that is really densly converd with trees and for which my old III could never hope to get signal. Hmmmm, wonder if there is a geocache on that trail anywhere???? may have to check that out. Thanks again all. Ed
  16. GeoBC, Great picture, love it. I have been to your guys web site before and my brother in law came up a long time ago for some great wheelin' in BC. As for publishing the trail data, my view point is this: I would have guys come up to me on the street and say "nice Jeep, do you take it off road?" to which I reply "every chance I get" they would reply "we would love to take ours off road but don't know where to go". There in lies the problem. Those without the information will wheel in illegal places and private lands which gives us all a bad name and makes it harder to make our case against evrionmentalist who would like to stop our hobby. The trail data I provide is available from any of our Forest Service maps and some of our local ranger districts even produce their own 4x4 maps for the trails in their areas. The problems I found with these maps is that they don't not accurately depict how hard or how easy a trail may be and the data becomes outdated after only a year or two because of logging or trail reroutes. Also, just finding the trail head can be a pain at times due to inaccurate data. What I provide is .tpo files for anyone who uses National Geographic Topo to download and therefore define their own GPS routes for download into their GPSs. I also provide printable maps with some of the obstacles defined and general trail ratings so that you know what to expect before you head out. All of the trails are numberd and sanctioned as 4x4 trails, nothing illegal. Trail abuse is a problem for all of us and that comes down to having the responsibility to Tread Lightly. This is an educational message that we all need to get across to the nubies. Many of our trails are only open for a set "season" usually July 15th through October or November. That minimizes the damage done due to too much water on the trails. They have a chance to dry out. I have also integrated Geocaching into Jeeping to give someone a destination, a goal to their Jeepn' trips besides just the trail. It is also kinda fun for the kids and the spouses who sometimes are not all that thrilled with Jeepn'. We have 4 Nwjeepn Geocaches around on our favorite trails for Jeepers to find and we plan more. I have two Jeep travel bugs that I want to put out this season with the intent on them seeing all of your favorite trails, I want pictures too!!!! Thanks Red90 for the information, I figured that the BNC on the new rig was a "mini" I should be able to just get an adapter. I have seen the 60cx for around $369 new on Ebay with free shipping. I think I had better get to selling some of my old crap around here to pay for it. Ed www.nwjeepn.com
  17. Thanks all for the input, my present Garmin III Pilot does have the BNC fitting for external antenna and I do have a Gillson mag mounted out on the hood of my TJ. I have had 2 Garmin III Pilots (for flying) and a normal III that I got for a great price. They have all been excellent units but my present Pilot version is just not working with the outside antenna or its own for that matter. I believe there is an actual problem with the antenna connector. I don't want to spend the money on fixing it right now and to be honest it is 10 year old tecnology so I am ready for something new. We just go back from the Litttle Naches area and some nasty muddy wheelin and I could not keep a good lock with my GPS to be able to get trail data for my maps. I traded out my unit for a friends III and it worked flawlessly with the ouside antenna. I have a center console in my Jeep with an old Dell laptop mounted on a turntable upside down. Software inverts the screen so it is readable. I run National Geographic Topo for mapping with the GPS connected to it. It looks to me like the 60CX uses the same old power/data cable that my III does??? can anyone confirm? It is the old round Garmin 4-pin plug. Also does it have the USB port? Does it transfer data and get power from the USB port? I am thinking that the 60CX is the way to go from all I have gathered here on the forums and from others I know that have them. I maintain a web site for wheelin' in the NW and I provide all my map data for download so a good GPS is crucial to me. Thanks all for the input Ed www.nwjeepn.com
  18. So after several years using a Garmin III Pilot in my Jeep I have come to a point where it just isn't getting good reception any more. I believe the antenna connector might be bad but rather than spend the money on fixing it I am thinking of buying a new unit. As my main use for the GPS is in my Jeep and in heavy forest cover most of the time I am concerned with reception. I have heard good and bad about the new CSX units from Garmin and all I know about Magellan is that they hold a signal well. I use the GPS connected to a laptop for moving map so I don't really care about basemaps, callendars, compases, altitude etc. All I want is reliable reception in dense cover. Any thoughts? Budget is around $500 I can fix anything, and if I can't fix it, I can fix it so nobody can fix it!
