Uploading Pictures

I won't do a quote for this because it'll be too big, so here it is, taken from the FAQ's at the top of the page.

Adding a Picture to a Forum Post

1. Your picture must be on the internet somewhere -- not on the hard drive. If you want to share a personal photo, but don't have web space, upload it to a cache log, cache page or your profile page.

2. Copy the URL for the image so that it's in your clipboard.

3. Compose your forum post. When you want to insert the image, click on the IMG button in the top "Code Buttons" section.

4. A dialog box will pop up, prompting you for the URL of the image. Paste the URL from your clipboard into the box (Ctrl-V = paste) and click "OK."

5. Preview your post to make sure it works!

If you are having trouble, try practicing in the test thread that is pinned at the top of the "Getting Started" forum.

Actually, that's how to get it to display on the page. To get it uploaded, click "Upload Images" in your big list of things to do in the top-right corner of the screen. Click "Browse", then find the file on your computer. Type in the file caption, which is what is what it will say on the link. The file description will appear under the link, so don't make it too wordy. Then click "Upload Images". It will take a minute or two, depending on your connection speed. Then it'll appear on your page just above the logs.

Icefall5, Thanks for your help , however after I click (upload images) I browse and find the .jpg, add the file caption, then click upload, wait until it is "done",return to the log and find nothing has changed, according to the FAQ's I'm suppose to add in the log an address for the file ie.

Is there anything else, I'm still can't see the image.

I appreciate anything you can add.

Thanks again

I was having that trouble a few months ago also. I found it may take some time for the picture to "go thru" You can try to refresh the page by hitting F5 after uploading the picture is complete- Or click "View Listing." Once I tried to upload a picture "unsuccessfully" about 4-5 times- the next day I found all 5 of the same picture on the log- deleating them can take some time too...perhaps someone else can explain the lag-time better than me. BTW I'm using slow dial up connection.

:D Let's see here. you want to upload an image. Do you want to upload it to a cache page or do you want to load it into your gallery for use on your own cache page?

----------------------------------Checking file size and image size ---------------------

* Just how large is the picture you are trying to upload. Ie. 600X600? I'm talking about the width and height of the image and how much memory does it use?

* If your like the rest of the world, you are using windows XP.

* Right click on the image you want to upload.

* Left click on Properties

* On the general tab this will tell you how many KB's the image is. It has to be 100kb or less. KiloBytes = KB.

* Click on the Summary Tab and click on the Advanced Button.

* This will give you the dimensions. I.e. 600X480 pixels.

* If your original image is under 125k or 600 pixels wide, the largest image will not be resized.

* If your image is over 100KB use Windows Paint to resize it and save it off as a jpeg or gif that is under 100Kb.

------------------------------Uploading image to cache you found --------------

Once the image is within the above specifications. I.e 100KB or less.

* Open the cache page you want to upload the image to.

* Click on Upload Images in the upper right hand menu under log your visit.

* Click the [browse] button and browse to the picture you want to upload.

* Double click on it or highlight it and click OPEN.

* Type in a caption.

* (optional) Type in a description.

* Click upload and the file is now upload to that cache page.

;) Good luck and keep the file sizes small..

So in order to upload an image that is not connected in any way to a cache, you have to upload it as your user picture, but just not select it for use as your user pic? Is that right? I'd like them to appear in my gallery, but not appear as my user pic and not on anyone's cache page :D I think what I just mentioned might work that way after reading this last big post...

And about the file size - I haven't had any problems uploading images straight off my digital camera. My camera is a 4.1mp, and I always keep it on the best quality - this means I get images that are about 1.5 megs in file size and 2048xsomething (I think, maybe bigger!) in resolution. When I upload them to GC.com, the server just resizes it for me, so I don't have to bother. I don't like resizing the images on my own computer because I like my images very large - for printing, etc.

I keep the original size images on my personal website anyhow :D. I just would like to add a few select images to my personal profile's gallery is all ;) Thanks for the tips, and I think I know what to do now...

if you have the files on your personal website, then all you have to do is to link to them with the "img" button while writing posts. no need to insert them into your profile at all. It's just for posts, you need to have the picture be somewhere on the web already - a personal webpage, www.bananas.com, whatever (no, I don't think that's a real website, just a random example). you can't post a picture from your harddrive to a forum post. but if they are on a personal webpage, you don't need to move them to your profile as well. (unless you want them for use as avatars, etc)

Well all of a sudden, I can't get my pics on my log page.....I upload a nice small jpg and all I see is a white rectangle. My photo on my profile page seems to have vanished as well although my gallery pics are still there. Multiple attempts at getting a photo on a recent log are unsuccesful. Any thoughts?

There's an option in most browsers (and some firewalls) to block images from a different domain than the web page requesting them. If you have that turned on, you won't see the images. since they come from Groundspeak.com and the webpage comes from geocaching.com.
