+GA Cacher
This Category would focus on navigational locks on rivers, canals. lakes or connecting oceans. Early inland waterways were simply natural rivers. Boats could not travel far inland, and could go uphill only by going up the slight gradient of a flowing river. The range could be extended by building a temporary dam downstream of the boat, and waiting for the level to rise. This system was made easier by "flash" locks, where the dams were replaced by permanent structures with removable sections. The lock would raise or lower the boat from one level to the other. Locks are found the world over making category a truly global Waymarking opportunity. Web Cam showing lock on the Panama Canal. The Panama canal has three locks as an example. Locks are found in Europe, Middle East, Far East, North Central and South America. Many locks are on the inland waterways of the US. A local cacher who is sailing his boat from Georgia up the East coast, down the St Lawrence river through only 2 great lakes has traversed 110 locks so far. Each with its own name and personality. There are lift locks, gate locks, incline locks and staircase locks. Virtually any where there is a navigable water way there will be some sort of a lock system. Of course a picture of the lock with GPSr or cacher with a little history of each lock would be need to log this waymark.
