Legend C

Recommended Posts

I have been flip flopping back and forth trying to decide on the right GPS unit for me. I have had an Explorist 200 for my fist unit. I had to return it a few weeks later because of malfunctions. At that time, I figured I better reevaluate my requirements. I had picked up an old Sportrak and found that the PC connection was a definite necessity. One thing led to another and before long I was looking at the 60c and Ex 500. Both seam to be very nice units, but expensive. So, I finally decided that the Legend C has everything I am looking for and at a reasonable cost. “Reasonable”, well, you know what I mean. I haven’t bought the legend c yet. Anyway, I was setting out a few Cache’s today. To get the best position, or one that I though I could trust, I figured I would carry my Sportrak and my fathers Legend. It’s funny, I knew the sportrak was slow deciding where it actually was, but I didn’t know the Legend had the same problem. You should know that these were very heavily wooded areas. I could see the sky straight up, but that was about it. I locked three locations and the all went the same way. It was a race to see which would finish first. I had just placed a point a few weeks earlier with the Ex 200 with out any problem, hmm.

Ok, my question is, does the Legend C have the same guts as the legend? I know the software seams to be differently. I.e. more and different functions, but how does it do locking in on a point even in a treed area? Know I back wondering if I should spend the extra money or wait and see if Garmin comes up with a new unit to compete with the explorist. A second option would be to buy another 200 and experiment building a PC cable for it. I saw a reference to that the other day and have the notes for it. Not the best solution, but at least I would know where I was in the woods. Best would obviously be a 60c with an external antenna.

So again, any thought on the Legend C.

tks

No, I had a old legend that I used for a year. It was a good unit but would be week in heavy tree cover.

The Legend C I have is much fast at picking up the satalites and holding them in heavy cover.

The USB connection and color screen are so much better then the old Legend. I really liked my old legend, but now that I have had a color unit I would never go back a gps that did not have color.

My Explorist 100 does a great job in the tree's too.

I would have to say the Legend C and the Explorist 100 each pick up the satalites in tree cover the same, very good.

One thing I like about the Legend C is the "Avg" button.

When you go to mark a waypoint you have the option to average it.

I could go on and on about the Legend C.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Now on to the photo's. ;)

The last photo was taken in the house.

Hey Milbank, I downloaded the Manual and read through it. I saw the averaging you talked about. Looks good. I see the Legend C has a similar Geocaching page. i.e. as you approach, make as found and locates the next. That looks pretty good too. Des it also display the info or hints af a cache? Is there a limit to how many points can be classed as geocache points? I read earlier tonight that the Ex500 only allows 200 to be geocache?

Another question. When the old legend and vista came out they would only take 500 point, but thought an update they now can take 1000. Does anyone think that will be the case with the C models too?

Yes, with the help of GSAK (gsak.net)

You can have the hint or a number of other things displayed in the "note" box.

I think it's limited to 30 characters so it will only hold the short hints, but still very usefull.

I have GSAK set up so when I download the geocaches to the gps if there is no hint it will put in the "note" box who hide the cache and the rating.

I have not heard of any limit on the Legend C

Yes, I do.

I also think they may change the limit on the "note" box from 30 characters to something more as the "note" box looks like you could put more in it.

Maybe after they are done doing all the software updates and see that they still have room to add these features. ;)

Of coarse this is mostly me wishing, as I don't really know.
