  1. I just started paperless caching. Before starting I read a couple of articles regarding cachemate, which I now have and it works great. My question is rearding an express loader and how do I upload to it. Here is a quote from one of the articles. "After you log your finds in CacheMate be sure to go to the Geocaching Express Logger for CacheMate at http://boulter.com/geocaching/logger/ and follow the directions for uploading you CacheMate logs. It's a very quick and convenient way to log you finds."
  2. Wow, those all look great. Any ideas for The C'kr "the seeker" I was thinking a little guy with a page/map in one hand showing the geocaching symbol, a 60cs gpsr in the other following a dotted trail to a cache or an X? any other thoughts?
  3. I just purchased a Dell Axim with Mobile Windows 5. I have GPXSonar and Ozi loaded and both working fine on their own. I thought I would be able to double click or open a waypoint information screen from Ozi, as the PC version does. I get an error The file "cannot be opened either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of it is components cannot be found.” Am I missing a software or do I need to disable the Trused Certificate?
  4. I did 4 today with a 4 year-old and an 10 year-old. Also had 3 DIF. did not find/finish. Great day. Those DIF are really annoying, you do all the work and then some after you spend 15 to 20 min searching. Then you have to go back another day with the clue. I'll have to find a way to load those too:) I just upload my GPS with 200-300 local points, it's hard to have a paper copy on hand. When we get the urge, we start searching.
  5. I just happend to walk into WalMart today (Canada) and just happend by the gps units. quite unexpectedly, I was stairing at a white Explorest for a few seconds before I realized that it was a 400. I can get the Legend C for the same price plus the 50 rebate. Boy, now I am wondering about the SD chip and how important it might be in the near future for expansion. which to choose black and white vs color, SD vs 24 meg. hmmm
  6. So, do you really think it could be past student, how long ago? If the student could not finish a two stage written math problem, do you think he/she has bought a GPS unit, searching the internet for your cache coordinates and then running out and systematically stealing them. Why would they bother? I think I would post a general coordinate and check if there are others with the same problem. That may not fix the cache theft, but at least you would know if you have a cache stalker. Maybe as a group, you could get together and find a solution.
  7. I have, I guess, an unusual cache to place. I would have classed it as an Earth Cache, but there are some unusual aspects. The actual site is 100 yards up stream on private property. I am quite sure I could get permission to the site, but I don’t want to encourage foot traffic up and down a stream or to disturbed the actual site. The Historical Society of Canada placed a marker at the site and a few signs, along with the 100 yards down stream. This sign is on town property, which has given it’s permission. It’s at this point I have placed a cache containing some photos of the area, as well as, a written documentary of the sight from the New Brunswick Museum. This is also where it no longer fits as an Earth Cache, as the qualifications state that no cache is to be left at the sight. Any ideas how to handle this? I think it is a very informative site.
  8. Hey Milbank, I downloaded the Manual and read through it. I saw the averaging you talked about. Looks good. I see the Legend C has a similar Geocaching page. i.e. as you approach, make as found and locates the next. That looks pretty good too. Des it also display the info or hints af a cache? Is there a limit to how many points can be classed as geocache points? I read earlier tonight that the Ex500 only allows 200 to be geocache? Another question. When the old legend and vista came out they would only take 500 point, but thought an update they now can take 1000. Does anyone think that will be the case with the C models too?
  9. Hey, Thanks for the feed back guy's. It looks like all my questions were answered. Looks like I will go with the Legend C after all.
  10. I have been flip flopping back and forth trying to decide on the right GPS unit for me. I have had an Explorist 200 for my fist unit. I had to return it a few weeks later because of malfunctions. At that time, I figured I better reevaluate my requirements. I had picked up an old Sportrak and found that the PC connection was a definite necessity. One thing led to another and before long I was looking at the 60c and Ex 500. Both seam to be very nice units, but expensive. So, I finally decided that the Legend C has everything I am looking for and at a reasonable cost. “Reasonable”, well, you know what I mean. I haven’t bought the legend c yet. Anyway, I was setting out a few Cache’s today. To get the best position, or one that I though I could trust, I figured I would carry my Sportrak and my fathers Legend. It’s funny, I knew the sportrak was slow deciding where it actually was, but I didn’t know the Legend had the same problem. You should know that these were very heavily wooded areas. I could see the sky straight up, but that was about it. I locked three locations and the all went the same way. It was a race to see which would finish first. I had just placed a point a few weeks earlier with the Ex 200 with out any problem, hmm. Ok, my question is, does the Legend C have the same guts as the legend? I know the software seams to be differently. I.e. more and different functions, but how does it do locking in on a point even in a treed area? Know I back wondering if I should spend the extra money or wait and see if Garmin comes up with a new unit to compete with the explorist. A second option would be to buy another 200 and experiment building a PC cable for it. I saw a reference to that the other day and have the notes for it. Not the best solution, but at least I would know where I was in the woods. Best would obviously be a 60c with an external antenna. So again, any thought on the Legend C. tks
  11. Really! lol I wonder which I decided on. lol No, really, I like the way and the ease that you can operate the Explorist. So yes, I would like to have one without the glitches and connects to a PC. But I have a limited knowledge of what the potential requirements might be. I have only been into this for 6 to 8 weeks. When I started, I couldn't see any need to have a PC connection. I could type four or five points in before I head out, which is still true. But now I know I want that connection. Why type a few when you can upload the whole area. Ah, too early in the morning. I see you highlighter the malfunction with the 200. Are Magellan know for problems. I agree, with the history of the sportrak and meridian "ie boomarange effect" and my 200 why would I go back to them. hmmm Well, I still like the ability to zoom around the map and id points without going thru a cumbersome menu system like the lengend. My father has one and I have to say, it works very well too. Ok, I see the point. have to pick up a 60 series and check out the functions. Ok, so are both brands pretty comparable. The 60c to 500 or the 60 to the 400? Will they both keep track of new or found geocaches as well as the other? and are both as accurate and fast locating positions.
  12. I had to return my Explorist 200, kept malfunctioning. I guess it just as well. Now that I have a cable for my sportrak, I can’t see going without a PC connection. SO, if I have to go to the EX 400, why not the 500 and have color too. OK, the 500 and the 60c seam to be in the same price category, so I am trying to decide which would be better for my needs/wants. I haven’t worked with either yet, but the both seam to have a pretty good geocaching mode. Can I get comments on both. What about software and other options. Generally which has better mapping for Atlantic Canada. Finally, do they both have the same abilities/accuracy and speed in determining a position. This Sportrak really sucks compared to the exporist 200. I really like it and would still have it but it was unreliable. It did a number of quirky things, but the worst was in the middle of a search I temporarily loss my signal and when it came back my memory was completely erased. That ended the trip for the day. I am also think the 400, does anyone know if there a difference in the geocahing section between the 400, 500 and 600.

  14. I am using EasyGPS to upload my Sportrak. why do I get a drscription in the message block on some of my waypoints, but not all. They all look the same while in EasyGPS.
  15. Has anyone built a cable for the sportrak? I saw a pin layout for the sierial port, but what is the layout on the sportrak. and is it a straight connection fromthe serial port to the case of the sportrak. ie any resistors or cap built into the cable.
