cuff&stuff Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 is there a way i can use my gps to measure a straight line from a to b and run a fence line? would it be better to use a compass? thanks
JohnX Posted March 2, 2005 Posted March 2, 2005 Strech a string from point A to point B? That's how I have always seen it done. You could also use a transit if you had one but you would need two people to use it effectively. I usually get 20' to 30' accuracy with my eTrex Legend. That is way off for a fence. The accuracy, or lack of, of a GPS is one of the things that makes geocaching a challenge.
Stony2008 Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) It really depends on the type of GPS you have. I usually just reset the track log on my etrex legend and start walking. It should tell you how many feet you have walked. Edited March 3, 2005 by Stony2008
+Renegade Knight Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 (edited) A hand held GPS like we use for geocaching is not accurate enough for this task. Neither is a compass. Edited March 3, 2005 by Renegade Knight
+Team Tigger International Posted March 3, 2005 Posted March 3, 2005 Laser level will shoot a straight line, then just measure it with a tape. Wulf
cuff&stuff Posted March 3, 2005 Author Posted March 3, 2005 yeah, figured laser was the way to go. thanks folks.
