+kcseagull
What is a witness post and what is a mark? Hate to be stupid, but. Kcseagull Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
A witness post is usually a posted sign showing that there is a benchmark nearby. Check here for what is a benchmark. Too much detail for me to type here. Quote Link to comment
+CYBret
A "mark" is a benchmark. You can find out more about them here. A witness post is simply a post that "bears witness" that a benchmark is nearby. They are used as reference points for where a benchmark is located. Here's a picture I took of both a benchmark and a witness post. Bret Quote Link to comment
Dale_Lynn
A witness post is a usually some sort of metal or wood maybe even plastic post placed in ground next to a Benchmark...... A bench mark is usually something like a round brass "marker" with unique data stamped into it and is usually found in a concrete base or cemented into a rock -"USGS Benchmarks"... A witness post can also be associated with something as simple as a piece of pipe or steep rod driven into ground to designate a property boundary or some other designated location... Here is a interesting description of " witness post"... http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/...on/witness+post Dale Quote Link to comment
+NickL
Some marks are for things other than USGS, though they are some of the most common that you will find. While hiking to/searching for the Project APE :Mission 12: Blind Canal cache I found this mark: The dot was actually set after the marker was placed. It marks the "exact" edge of the canal properity.
