Mapping caches

I'm new to this, have gone out several times and we're getting hooked. We've found all the nearby caches, so have to start taking a ride for more. Since the web site shows caches according to their distance from you, but not direction ( ie: 2 caches listed about 15 miles away could be in opposite directions ), planning a trip to find caches that are clustered together geographically becomes more important. Is there any mapping software or web site that lets you mark caches so that you can plot them on a map and see their locations easily?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered elsewhere.

Yes. This website has cache maps. Go to the "locate caches" box on the home page and click on your state. At the top, you'll see "map" and click on that. There is also this website, which is a bit more robust.

Another alternative is to dowload the waypoints to your GPS and transfer them to Garmin Mapsource, National Geographic Topo, or similar mapping software.

Or.... simply type in the ZIP CODE of the city you want to visit, then take the closest Caches and get to it. That is what I do.

Welcome to geocaching!

When you do the search for nearest caches, the direction the cache is in is listed right after the distance. That should help you get a general idea.

Once you know you are truly hooked, you can become a premium member, and use the Pocket Query feature to get all the caches you want emailed to you in a GPX file. Then you can use a free program called Watcher to filter/display caches tons of different ways. One option is to only show caches in the direction you're interested in.

I download the waypoints from geocaching.com and then upload them to my laptop in the program "StreetAtlas". I can zoom down all the way to street level. We use it to help us in our search for the caches as well, it has a function that will allow you to plug in your GPS and track your movement in real-time on the screen. We plug the laptop into the cigarette adapter.

God bless you and your family,

I do this in 2 ways. If I am printing maps I upload the waypoints to National Geographics Topo maps. Having become a premium member I have access to pocket queries. This allows me to request a weekly download of caches in 3 areas that I choose. I am able to download them to my Ipaq and create pushpins for my pocket streets and trips. I then have a copy of each cache (including hints) and the last 5 logs plus pushpins in streets and trips showing where each cache is located. Now if only they were that easy to actually find. icon_wink.gif

Lost? Keep going. You're making good time anyway!!

You can use CacheMaps to retreive a wide range of online maps for your caches.

Load your caches into cachemaps, select the one you want a map for, select what map and there you go. Over 20 different online maps supported.

And if you want to use other software like ExpertGPS or OziExplorer, the waypoinst can be send directly to it.

Not supported software (like the ones mentioned above) can be easily added using small external configuration files.

Look at the site and if you have questions, please ask.

Happy hunting!
