TheRevelator
Can anyone recommend a software package that will download waypoints via to a Garmin GPSMAP 76CS via a USB connection. I tried using EasyGPS but it only seems to allow tranfers via serial port. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks Quote Link to comment
+DavidMac
I have a 60CS, so your unit may be different, but the USB cable only communicates in the proprietary Garmin format. You can transfer dats through USB using one of Garmin's software products, such as Mapsource or the Trip and Waypoint Manager, but I have had no luck getting it to work in any other program (there may be a way, but I haven't had the unit long enough to have found one yet). One solution would be to use GSAK, GPSBabel, or EasyMPS to convert GPX or LOC files to Mapsource format. This works if you already have Mapsource or T&WM- I don't think these can be found for free though- even the T&WM software costs money if it didn't come packaged with a GPS. My recommendation is to get a serial transfer cable off of Ebay. They can be found for as little as $12.00 or less, and work in just about any program as long as you have a serial port or a serial->USB converter. I can send you a link to a round 4-pin cable that I've been pretty happy with if you're interested. Edited August 23, 2004 by DavidMac Quote Link to comment
Robin's End
I had the same puzzlement. Since I had MapSource anyway, I found EasyMPS to be just the ticket. Simply drag a .loc file on top of the EasyMPS window and MapSource fires up with the wayponts ready to download to the unit (in my case a VistaC). Slick. Quote Link to comment
+ZackJones
TheRevelator: It's considered bad form to post the same topic more than once. I answered your question here: Other Discussion Zack Quote Link to comment
moopgroop
Appears to be a bit different question. Looks like TheRevalator took your advice on EasyGPS but it doesn't allow direct USB transfer either. Quote Link to comment
+LisaS
EasyGPS does allow data transfer via USB connection, at least with the 60CS. I just set it up that way initially, and haven't had any trouble at all. I did have trouble getting it configured that way, but eventually beat it into submission. Quote Link to comment
Robin's End
EasyGPS seems to rely on USB drivers being configured as 'virtual serial' ports - so on the setup screen for EasyGPS you specify which serial port is actually USB in disguise. I wasn't able to suss out how to do that so took the other Easy route. Quote Link to comment
TheRevelator
Thank you all for the responses. I am making some progress I think. I do have MapSource and I did get EasyMPS. Now I have another problem. My home computer is CHANGING the file extensions during downloading of the waypoint files from geocaching.com. I know these are supposed to be .loc files, but when I receive them they are .aspx files. I think this is some sort of html file format? Does any body have any suggestions? thanks again... +SAPD
I have the same problem when I try to download the files while using MSN. I found that if I closed MSN and connected to the internet using Internet Explorer I could download the waypoints with the .loc extension Quote Link to comment
