+seventhings
I have had the opportunity to "recover" the Lewis and Clark commemorative disks at Monticello, Harpers Ferry and the US Mint in Philadelphia. Looks like I'll be taking a trip to the St Louis area in October, and I would like to visit as many of the commemoratives as possible. Does anybody have the handheld coordinates or detailed descriptions (the NGS site is rather vauge re most of the disks) for the following: Louisville, KY Clarksville, IN St Louis (at the park) St Louis (is there a disk at/near the Arch?) Wood River/Camp DuBois, IL St Charles, MO Washington, MO Have I missed any east of Washington, MO FYI - here are the coords/locations for the three that I've found: Monticello, Charlottesville, VA = N38-00.593 W078-27.215, see HW0496 for a verbal description. Harpers Ferry, WV - N39-19.384 W077-43.716. See JV3935 for a verbal description. This mark has its own PID=DF4764 in the NGS database, and lists adjusted coordinates of N38-19-22.88900 w077-43-42.93462. US Mint, Philadelphia, PA - N39-57.173 W075-08.893. See JU0725 for the verbal description. Thanks all Will Quote Link to comment
Wild T2
No coordinates, but the Clarksville Indiana marks are in the Falls of the Ohio State Park. Here is a map. http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/maps/fallsohio_trail.pdf There is a small disk near the historical marker at the Clark Cabin Site and boat ramp. Access to the boat ramp may be a problem. http://www.in.gov/serv/presscal?PF=dnr&Clist=11&Elist=81518 The big disk is near the sign for the Interpretive Center. +rogbarn
St Louis (is there a disk at/near the Arch?) Yes, but it is an older one, not a Lewis & Clark one. As GEO*Trailblazer said, one will be put there in 2006 at the end of the expedition. The NGS has a good web site with the list of places and schedule of the major markers. It's at Signature Sites Schedule Also, check out: News from Lewis and Clark Events which lists most (all?) Lewis & Clark markers including several that I did not know about: Kaw Point, KS - June 26, 2004 The United States Mint at Denver - March 15, 2004 Western Governors Association Meeting - February 22, 2004 Edited to add NGS info Edited August 19, 2004 by rogbarn Quote Link to comment

+bigredmed
You can probably catch them along the way as they get grounded alot. Perhaps you could use your GPS to find shallows in the river and email them the locations and dates found. They were going to park the boats in Boyer Chute, and ended up having to park them in the river as the chute was too shallow for their keels and propellers (yep, no polling for these guys...) Was part of the HAM support for the group as it moved from Omaha to Ft Calhoun for the first tribal council. Also, might think about event caches or some other way of hooking geocaching onto the events. Given the mobs of people who showed up for the FTC, a funny one might be "How Far to Parking?" and set a VC at the far end of the farthest parking lot at each of the next signature events. +rogbarn
The NGS has posted details about the dedication of the geodetic commemorative marker at Omaha/Ft. Collins here. You can find the exact coordinates of the marker in this photo of the plaque next to the marker. Quote Link to comment
