Z15 Posted May 6, 2004 Posted May 6, 2004 (edited) This is a first for me, never seen anything like this one in my 30 yrs. I think I am going to see if I can find the tree, unless its been logged out. +happycycler Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 (edited) Very different! I would tend to agree that MARK OF QUESTIONABLE OR UNKNOWN STABILITY would apply to that one. Thank you for sharing that one. Edited May 7, 2004 by happycycler Quote

+Colorado Papa Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 I think I am going to see if I can find the tree, unless its been logged out. If you find the tree, take a picture of where the mark once was and another from a few feet away. Will be interesting to try to understand the reasoning of ever placing a marker there? It's true that trees do grow from the top and a vertical location would certainly not move upward but it would shift horizonally as the tree aged. Definitely unstable! Quote
+Black Dog Trackers Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Here are a couple of old tree stations in Arizona that I foolishly looked for. These don't say that an actual disk was placed and are therefore less interesting than elcamino's station. They don't say what the marker was. I imagine there are a lot of these around. At the higher elevation one, people gazed at me out the window of the restaurant that replaced the Junipine store as I circled the parking lot and highway a couple of times looking for a big juniper tree that is long gone. Just an old stump now, or maybe gone completely. At the Junipine former store - no pic. Quote
+bons Posted May 7, 2004 Posted May 7, 2004 Would the disk move or would the tree just grow around it? It could be that the disk is there, but buried within the tree. With so many years gone by it could easily be surrounded by tree by now. Quote
Z15 Posted May 7, 2004 Author Posted May 7, 2004 The tree would grow around the disk. Seen it many times with section corner witness's placed in tree's. I am researching the area. There has been lots of mining in this area since 1948 and I don't know yet if I can get into the area. Its about 60 miles from my location and I may need the 4 wheeler to get there but I am going to see if I can. That tree should be very prominent if it still there. 33 inches in diameter, maybe it about 48 now? Quote
+Spoo Posted May 8, 2004 Posted May 8, 2004 Try this one......there are sveral similar in this sequence of numbers.....maybe an old road survey. PF0297 Documented History (by the NGS) Unknown by NHHD (MONUMENTED) 1/1/1936 by NGS (GOOD) DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1936 6.5 MI SE FROM ERROL. ABOUT 6.5 MILES SOUTHEAST ALONG STATE HIGHWAY 26 FROM ERROL, COOS COUNTY, ABOUT 1.5 MILES NORTHWEST OF THE MAINE-NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE LINE, 133 FEET NORTHEAST OF MOST NORTHWESTERLY UMBAGOG LAKE SIGN WITH AN ARROW, 24 FEET SOUTHWEST OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE HIGHWAY, AND IN THE ROOT OF A BLAZED 14-INCH TREE. A NAIL AND WASHER. Quote
Z15 Posted May 8, 2004 Author Posted May 8, 2004 Spoo I have seen 100's of those. It was very common for highway road construction surveys (what I did for 30 yrs) to set nails in tree roots. Also USGS often did that too. It was a cheap way to carry on the survey as many times they had to make due with what they could carry on their person. Today its not a accepted practice due to having an embedded object that could later prove to be a big problem if someone cuts into the tree and hits the nail etc. Pieces would come out like a bullet if hit by power equipment.
