Magellan Sportrac

Los Lacos

Recommended Posts

I am completely new at this and need information. We received a Magellan Sportrac (yellow) as a gift. As far as I can tell it did not come with anything but the unit itself. I see information on cables and maps but I'm unclear on what the capabilities of this unit are. If I purchase the cable, is the unit capable of storing maps? I'd love to chat with someone who has the same unit. Thanks!

Congratulations, and welcome to the sport/addiction. I will warn you now; you will probably get some posts about “why did you get that instead of ?????” Here you are all excited about your new toy and the excitement you will have using it, and someone wants to burst your bubble. The yellow SporTrack will due just fine for geocaching.

The only reason you “might” need the PC cable is for downloading waypoints to the unit instead of entering them using the buttons on the unit. You can also download extra Points of Interest (POI’s) if you also purchase the DataSend software.

Welcome aboard and have fun.

Wlecome to the madness! I have a SporTrak Map. Not exactly the same, but similar. Your model, if I am not mistaken has no base map built in and is a little different on it's displays and functions.

First I suggest going through the manual (I assume it came with one) carefully and it will help answer some questions and get familiar with your GPSr. But here are some links that may be of help to you.....

I would not buy directly from Magellan's retailer - there are much cheaper alternatives.

They are really quite easy to use, just take it slow and 1 thing at a time. Don't get overwhelmed by everything at once.

The ampping software can get pretty pricey (100-150) but it does help having the map on your GPS instead of having to interpret what the GPS says as compared to a paper or internet map. I have seen some good deal on software on ebay, just be sure you are not looking at pirated stuff.
