  1. By George! I think we have it! I had to change GSAK to use defaults. I do believe it is all better now. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT!
  2. Oh so close and yet just not there yet. I installed 7.7.0.86. If I uncheck the debug mode, it will send the caches to the unit HOWEVER.... The symbols are correct but the cache name now appears to be the HINTS. If I leave the debug mode checked, it give me the huge error message and will not load the caches at all.
  3. Yes I have the PN30 selected. I chose the Cache Type Only selection. I'm unsure how to attach a screenshot of the error message but won't let me select any of the text to put in this message. Its very lengthy. It starts out with Error sending Waypoints...GPS Babel V1.3.7-beta 20091003... Then there is a ton of other codes.
  4. I'm trying to figure out a problem with GSAK symbols on my PN30. This isn't the exact question asked by the original poster but I'm hoping for some guidance. If I use CR to send the caches to the PN30, it will show the correct cache symbols (multi, unknown, etc). If I use GSAK, they all show traditional. My method of transferring was loading the file into GSAK v7.6.2.45 and then using the Delorme GPS Export macro v1.0.3. I've tried using the GPS Send Waypoints but it just gives me a very lengthy error message. I know this can't be that hard. That has got to be a very simple step by step way to handle this. Guidance would be appreciated!
  5. Unfortunately, gc.com (or maybe the manufacturers communication with gc.com) is universally bad about that. The same thing is true for Garmins. For a long time, the gc.com site only listed the Colorado, although the Oregon works the same way. Now it lists CO and OR, but is missing the Dakota -- which also works the same way... Forums are your friend You have all been very helpful in my decision process. I think for the money I will purchase the PN30. Sure I'd like an Oregon but that seems a bit silly for me to spend that amount of money for the level of caching that we do. I'm a bit concerned about the auto direction capability but I'm use to driving around in circles anyway. The battery usage can't be any worse than my Magellan Merdian Color. I always keep a stash of 6-8 rechargables for it anyway. Thanks for all the input!
  6. If I buy the PN30 vs the PN40 then I'll have extra money for the fancy dancy expensive suction cup holder! How long can I expect the Li-Ion rechargable battery to last in the PN30? I'm not an extreme cacher. Mostly local and state parks. I'm hearing different opinions on the road routing capabilities of the PN series. I've been using a Magellan Meridian Color for several years now and have no problems with the routing capabilities of it. Should I expect the Delorme to be comparable? I don't have a separate car navigational system.
  7. I need to ponder a PN30 vs PN40 then if they both allow uploading of field notes. Guess I'll go back to my price checking. Are the electronic compass and barometric altimeter really something I should be concerned about? I'm just a basic cacher.
  8. When I go to the Field Notes option on Geocaching.com, they don't list the PN30 as an option. Only the PN40. But you think the PN30 allows for field note uploading? That would be great as it would save me a bunch of money.
  9. I'm contemplating purchasing a PN40 but have a few questions. Am I right in assuming that the PN40 is the only version that allows the uploading of field notes to geocaching.com? The PN30 is $100 cheaper but it doesn't look like it has that capability. What other "accessories" will I need? I see the following available: carrying case, power kit, car adapter, car mount. I can see the benefits of the carrying case and the power kit. But the car mount seems rather expensive since it doesn't actually power. I can see the power kit vs the car adapter for the rechargable battery option. I'd appreciate any thoughts/suggestions?
  10. His group leader is responsible for getting them from Point A to Point B. The GPSr is only for caching. My question is whether there is anything we have to do with the setup on the actual GPSr once he arrives at the wall.
  11. My teenage son will be hiking along Hadrians in just 5 short days! We are from Indiana. I've purchased a Magellan explorist 210 for him to take along and perhaps grab a cache or two along the way as long as it doesn't take them off their plotted course. My question is whether there is anything we need to do to the GPS setup since he will be in a different country. Obviously he won't have maps but we didn't figure that would be necessary since he can't stray off their path. Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  12. Hey We found a Walt Disney World Benchmark in Florida, just outside of EPCOT. If any one wants to you can go find it yourself. it isnt in the database though. 28 22.586 N 81 33.018 W It is set in the pathway heading from the main entrance to Epcot heading to some bus stations.
  13. I would like to hear any and all comments on either the Meridian Gold or Meridian Color. Which to buy?
  14. After geocaching for about 5 months, I've decided I have to get myself a little more organized. I am not the most electronic gadget literate person in the world. I've tried reading past posts about going paperless but I'm still lost. Let's start out with - we have a basic Magellan Sportrac. Does great and have had no problems. We've found about 125 caches with it. We download the waypoints using EasyGPS. I have 2 questions. 1 - I would like to go paperless but have never touch a PDA (if that is what you actually call them) in my life so wouldn't even know where to begin. Don't care to use it for anything but downloading the sheets for caches. I'm sure I could figure out how to use Cachemate once I actually had something to download it to. but what unit to purchase? 2 - we need a better way for maps. Currently I print off driving directions (more paper) for each cache. So obviously that is not the smartest time efficient thing to do. Would I be able to get mapping on the PDA? The way I see it I could upgrade to a GPS that has maps thus eliminating the need for maps but that still doesn't solve the cache paper problem. So.....recommendations are greatly needed.
  15. What is the proper etiquette when another cacher approaches as you are logging your find? I've had it happen twice and I was unsure how to handle the situation. Its pretty obvious what we are doing and that we have found it. I hate spoiling it for others but I feel like the deer caught in headlights.
  16. We have a basic Sportrac (not map), we have the cable to connect it to the computer, we have downloaded Easy GPS, we are able to download waypoints to unit. So far so good. Question is - renaming waypoints. Am I to assume you just do it in the Easy GPS program itself? Is there an easier way to get them to download with the cache name in it instead of having to rename them all?
  17. I am completely new at this and need information. We received a Magellan Sportrac (yellow) as a gift. As far as I can tell it did not come with anything but the unit itself. I see information on cables and maps but I'm unclear on what the capabilities of this unit are. If I purchase the cable, is the unit capable of storing maps? I'd love to chat with someone who has the same unit. Thanks!
