Opinions on this cache idea (long)

Alright here's the basic background. I'm rather proud of my hometown history, and there are some facts that are little known that I would like to bring to light. I realize that there are plenty of people who wouldn't want to spend the time to do this one, and it may not be parent/young child friendly because of the amount of time in a vehicle finding one cache.

Now I'm wanting to place a multi-cache that would require a visit to 5 virtual sites and provide clues to the final location. Yes it is physically possible to place a cache (even a .50 ammo can) however I don't want to saturate the area, I don't think it would be tactful to place a container in some of the places, and some of the places would be next to impossible to find a container w/o getting caught and would probably be illegal. Now none of the sites are illegal or tactless to actually visit and read signs, they just don't lend themselves to a container.

These 5 sites would take about a 10-15 mile drive round trip and I would expect someone to spend about an hour or so on it. But each area is interesting and worthy of at least a virtual. I want to "show off" these sites to everyone, but I also WANT to make it somewhat of a difficult adventure.

Now with this, some of the sites are obvious as to their history, and some aren't. What I want to do is make several CD's and cassette tapes that one would be able to play in their vehicle while traveling from site to site that would explain the significance of what they're looking at and give some background info that isn't so well known. So I would place the cd/tape in caches in other areas. It would be required that you pick one of these up in order to get the correct info for the cache starting point. (I would also make available a hard copy of the info for those unable/unwilling to use a CD/Tape). There would also be an actual log sheet that one could print off to keep track of all of the required information, and would also give instructions on how to manipulate the data to get the final coordinates.

The final location would be well stocked and have a nice first through third finders prize, and I would make sure to maintain it carefully to keep it well stocked as to make the end justify the means. The final location would also be tied into the virtuals as something interesting and of historical significance.

This is not meant to be a quick 1/1 cache, and I realize that there are people who just aren't going to be willing to spend any time on it. It's really geared towards those who like a little bit of a puzzle, like an adventure, like history, and like to learn/experience new things. I figured I'd toss it out here first because I know there is a high likely hood that it wouldn't be approved at first due to the virtual aspect of it. So I would end up here anyhow...so I'm just getting a jump on things, I guess. As for the approvers I'm basically going to say the exact same things I've said here so they can better understand what I'm trying to do when they go to approve it. I realize they have a lot of work to do, and if I can eliminate them having to e-mail me then that's probably a good thing. Opinions???

Well that would be possible, I suppose. It wouldn't be necessary to drive, it would just take a little longer. icon_biggrin.gif

As long as the final location is a physical cache and assuming you'll list this as a single multi-cache, then I see no problem with your idea. In fact, many multi-caches have virtual components to them. And while this type of cache will not appeal to everyone, there are enough people around who will love the challenge and history lesson. I say "go for it!"

Yeah I realize that multi-virts are out there, I just know there has been a lot of negativity regarding vitrs lately. That's the main reason I wanted to air out my idea to the forum masses first.

Go for it. It sounds like fun. We have a few around here that range from this to ones that take most of a day and over 100 miles of driving. So you are right some people won't do it, but it doesn't sound that bad to me.

The negativity is to virts that are nothing special, that the placer hasn't put much thought into, and don't have a regular cache at the end. Your's is none of that. Full steam ahead.

I think a history tour cache is a great idea, using info found at each stop to determine the final co-ords.

A big part of my enjoyment of this activity is its ability to take me places I wouldn't find or learn about on my own. Like this geology lesson I received today!

Unless you really want to play audio tour guide for the seekers I think that the hard copy is enough. By adding the cd/tape element you create the need for a mechanism to return the audio tours to square 1. While some considerate cachers may be willing to do so, others may not. Perhaps you can make enough and have folks leave them in a seperate compartment of the final stage box and you can make the return during cache maintainence? Or is that too much for you to take on?

Leaving room for a well-planned multicache like this one is WHY so many simple one-stage virtual caches are being denied these days, right? Sounds good to me, and if I were in your area I would hunt for it. It's great to rely on the local geocachers to show us the cool spots we might not otherwise see.

The audio tour is great! You might also make the audio available for download from a link on the cache page, exclusively or in addition to the ready-made copies.

The best use of virtuals is as clues to a final cache. That sounds like what you are trying to do.

Too many people want to 'place' a virtual at some marker without even thinking that 200 feet away is a really good hiding spot for the container. Kudos to you for tying your favorite markers into a real cache instead of making each one a worthless virtual.

Sorry.

Ahem.

ANYway. This sounds to me exactly what geocaching should be about: introducing folks to interesting places. I hope it gets approved, it sounds cool.

So, whatcha gonna name him? icon_wink.gif
