Zuckerruebensirup
I knew it would happen eventually, and told myself I wasn't going to get upset when the time came...but now that it has, I couldn't help feeling bummed. Today I discovered that my very first cache (and my only actual ammo can out of six placements) is missing. I've heard stories here of people who took the "mystery box" home...ended up reading the info page, and later put the cache back. I'm hoping that something like this will happen, but highly doubting that it will. More likely, my cache (and its contents) was deliberately stolen, and I'll never see it again. I'm curious, though, how many of you have had a cache come up missing (not just a "no found" logged...but you actually confirmed yourself that it was gone), and had it mysteriously show back up again at a later date. Dare I hope? Quote Link to comment
+15Tango
I put my first cache on a popular ice-fishing lake on a point of land that I assumed didn't get much traffic, and two different cachers went to find it as soon as it was posted and didn't find it. I went to the site, and found my container intact, but not where I had placed it, so I assume an ice-fisher-person found it, took it home, read the notice, and then put it back. I replaced the tupperware-ish container with an ammo can, which I thought would be harder to spot unless one knew what they were looking for, but there still has been a couple of incidental finds. At least the cache was still in place when I did maintenance a week or so ago. I've come to notice that a lot of people who find a cache incidentally will still trade, but will take good stuff and leave crap--I had a couple of CDRom games, a hot wheels jeep, and other good stuff that has been replaced by lures and bobbers. www.1800goguard.com Quote Link to comment
+Gimpy
Last summer, I placed a cache in a real nice area with trails at the end of a lake up here in NY State. Cache was logged many times with no problems. Then came hunting season. During the summer months, the area is apparently seldom used. But from what I understand now, it's a very popular hunting area in the fall. So out of the blue, I get a notification of another log to the cache page. I read it, & it's a hunter, that has never heard of geocaching, & came upon the cache. The ammo box cache container was painted up & very well identified as a geocache (as all my caches are), so he had no fear in opening it up. He pulled out the geocaching info sheet that I place in my caches, along with a form that I also use that has my info on it. He thought the whole idea behind the game was "cool". He made a trade (a shotgun shell was all he had to trade) & signed the log. He then placed the cache back in its spot. I planned on heading down & pulling the cache, as with the change in seasons, it was obviously not as well hidden as when I placed it. Before I could get down there, 2 other cachers logged it as "not found". I went there & sure enough, it wasn't there. I archived it. A couple of weeks ago, about 4 months later, I get an e-mail from a gentleman that lives near the area. There is a stream that runs into the lake near where the cahce location was, & he fishes the stream often. He's walking the edge of the stream, & comes across this box stuffed along side a tree stump. Opens it up, and reads the info, signs the log & jots down my e-mail address. All we can figure, is that another hunter, who also signed the log book, decided he'd find a better spot to hide it. Just didn't bother to tell anyone. I'm heading down this weekend to retrieve it & place it in a better location there or elsewhere. That'll teach me to take into account what the area will look like when the seasons change & the foliage disappears. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I too placed a cache on a popular ice fishing lake. I went back to check it last week and not only was the cache gone, but so was the ice! I'll be darned, nothing but water as far as the eye can see! Quote Link to comment
