Digital imaging questions, how to lower resolution to be able to post?

For some time now I’ve been scanning photos to posting on the Geocaching wed site with great results. I’ve just purchased an Olympus D550 digital camera. I know I have the option to shoot images at a low resolution (640 x 480) and be able to post them.

My question is, if I shoot images at a photo quality resolution (1984 x 1488). There is a setting that I can re-save the image to a lower resolution through HP Director (software, HP Photosmart-230, 4 x 6 color printer) but I still cannot get any lower than 114kb, from a 702kb image.

Is there an easy way to get a 700kb resolution to under 100kb’s? Dose anyone know of any free software that can be downloaded?

A couple of things come to mind:

- crop your image if possible

- save as jpg and go down to 90 or 95% quality

You don't say what OS you are running. Most flavors of Windows have something like PhotoEditor or Imaging (or even Paint) included.

...also, if the images that you're posting have a resolution that is higher than 72 pixels per inch, you're using a resolution that is denser than most monitors are capable of displaying (so, if the image is to be viewed on the web, there's nothing being gained ...aside from a larger file size).

Thanks for the help, I downloaded Easy Thumbnails it’s exactly what I wanted, something “easy” I took a 701Kb image and converted it to 98kb with great resolution for web posting.

Cool. Glad I could help. No one seems to appreciate me around here [sob]. I don't even have a verb named after me.
