Why is there elevation data for Canada, Mexico, and some South American countries in Mapsend USA?

Recommended Posts

This is something I noticed several months ago but forgot about after I received no replies in the yahoo group when I posted a similar question. Does any one know if the TOPO data in Canada is accurate? You may be thinking I am nuts, but those of you with mapsend TOPO USA open it and scroll over to the Canadian side of the border and zoom into a scale of 50-20 miles (this is the only ranges it works for me). If you are zoomed in far enough you should see the elevation in a box at the button. As you move around Canada you should see the elevation changes. I thought that it may be mapsend just connecting points between areas in the continental US and Alaska, but when you move the cursor over water in Canada it will basically stay at the same elevation (or as good as you get with mapsend). So this disproves my theory of connecting elevations of the US data. Any one else notice this? If Magellan already has TOPO data for Canada, and they have S&D Canada why don't they come out with a mapsend TOPO Canada?

Edit: I also noticed this in Mexico and some South American countries.

I don't know about Canada, but I do know that the elevation data for Mexico City looks good. My guess as to why there isn't anything showing for Mexico except very rudimentary highway lines is investment cost vs. expected income. Plus the fact that (at least in Mexico City), map data that's available isn't very accurate. I use Guia Roji (supposedly the best map source)when I'm in Mexico City, and comparing actual location lat/lon in my GPS with the lat/lon on my laptop with Guia Roji's lat/lon shows the Gui Roji coordinates off by up to several hundred meters. Guia Roji says they're using NAD83, so it's not a datum problem.
