Image Upload - Gif

Im trying to add a gif image to my cache listing, I know if I upload it using the image uploader on the cache page, it strips out the animation which is helpful.

 

But then I remembered that the release notes for when 3rd party image hosts got blocked said that there are some approved domains, namely google and dropbox.

 

So I have uploaded to Google Drive AND Dropbox, but yet the cache page still tells me Remove all images hosted on a third-party website to save changes. Tip: Upload images directly to the cache page with the user-friendly editor.

 

So what gives????

Here are the steps I took to upload an animated .gif to my geocache listing. (EDIT: now removed because I don't actually want it there)

1. Upload the GIF to Google Drive.
2. Share the file.
3. Make sure that it's set to "Anyone with the link can view."
4. Copy the link (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j5PPqBT_e9JSymtT4CGXOr8DsFc2m7fh/view?usp=sharing) and extract the "identifier" (the unreadable bit in the middle.) For me, that's "1j5PPqBT_e9JSymtT4CGXOr8DsFc2m7fh".
5. Embed the image on the cache page by linking to "https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id={THE ID HERE}". In my case, that's https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1j5PPqBT_e9JSymtT4CGXOr8DsFc2m7fh.
6. There's probably a more user-friendly method of obtaining that link, but I don't know of one.

I had been trying to use the googleusercontent.com link - Changed it to the drive link and it's let me in!

Yup, that (was) the issue. When they say "Google Drive", they literally mean drive.google.com...

 

It would be helpful if they added googleusercontent.com to the approved hosts, too -- it would allow you to link to photos in your Google Photos, for example.

I'm guessing the same would probably apply for dropbox as that had a weird address too.  But now I know how to get google to work, I'll stick with google!

Sounds good!

 

It's even easier if you use OneDrive; you can just click "Embed" and it'll even go as far as to generate the HTML code for you! (it has trouble with GIFs, though -- only static content because it gets put behind the image proxy.)

Hahahaha..... when you said 5. Embed the image on the cache page by linking to "https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id={THE ID HERE}" I tried and tried and tried and no luck.  Then  I decided that maybe the { } was for reference.  Removed the brackets and TAH-DAH!!!  That worked.  Duh.   

 

MANY THANKS, that worked!!!  Would be nice is GC would tell you that you can do that.

For dropbox when you get the share link, just change the querystring extension at the end of the url to ?raw=1 and that will properly embed the image.

Don't know how you figured out that trick, but thanks a billion! I spent loads of time creating a puzzle gif that I couldn't get to work even though I kept trying all kinds of things in my Google drive.  This information was exactly what was needed!  Thank you!
