Chirp definitely won't work if enclosed in an ammo can.  But best case scenario for transmission, high in a tree or whatever, is about 80 feet, including the line of sight distance up into the tree.

My gadgets are hanging in trees. Been there over 10 years without battery changes or maintenance. Still working.

 

Anything electric you put outside needs a good container. Hermetically sealed is the best if you want it to last more than few months.
