Nuvi 255W

I have an old Auto GPS, Garmin Nuvi 255W. I had relative luck about 6 years ago with this but am getting back into geocaching and running into problems. I've searched for this for the last week and found similar questions dating back to 2008 but none seemed to be my specific question and I don't know if any of those responses are outdated.

I want to see geocaches on my screen while I am driving to see if a short detour may lead to a cache while driving. I do not want to cache with the Nuvi, I have handhelds for that. With what luck I have had, some of them show up as little treasure chests on my screen while I am driving.

my brain is wired to take direct, step by step directions. if anyone can help.

so far I have tried to download directly to the GPX folder and the POI folder on both the devise and the SD card. I have also tried doing that with the Garmin POI loader. it says I have successfully downloaded 1,000+ files. but I can only see a quarter of the results on the screen (northeast). at one point I turned it on and only saw the results for the northwest. I cant attach the image that I have but if you picture the big circle of caches you get when you run a pocket query, I am only seeing one quarter of that pie. I also still have a lot of available memory on the devise, so I know that isn't the issue.

I've never been asked if the devise wants me to read from the SD card (ive seen this on other forums). does my SD card need something done to it to be read? I saw something about a FAT32 Format??? right now I just have the blank card with a "GPX" and "POI" folder that I created.

<_< Have you gone here to check what your Nuvi can do? http://www8.garmin.com/products/poiloader/index.jsp

The Nuvi 500 can be used for Paperless Geocaching and can be found at various sites.

Your link just points to the POI Loader page, and the OP doesn't have a Nuvi 500, so your post doesn't seem very helpful. Making faces at the OP doesn't help.

...right now I just have the blank card with a "GPX" and "POI" folder that I created.

Those two folders need to be inside a "Garmin" folder. That is, the folder structure should look like [sD card drive]:\Garmin\GPX.

It may also be worth noting (but may not having anything to do with the problem) that, at least according to one site I found, that the maximum size SD card you can put into a Nuvi 255W is 8gig. I'm surprise that the OP could see any caches all if the SD card didn't have the correct directory structure.

SUCCESS! I tried deleting all of the POI's and staring from scratch. I deleted everything in the POI folder and GPX folder, took out the SD card. Turned on the GPS and the old Geocaches were still on the screen. I tried using the POI loader to "remove all custom POIs" and had the same result. Finally, thought of a factory reset on the devise. That go rid of them.

Next step was to get the new pocket query into the Nuvi. I used the POI Loader and that brought them in. unfortunately (like complaints I saw in other posts) they didn't show on the screen until you zoomed all the way into ground level. Not very functional and also, the icon was just a little BB on the screen. Probably wouldn't see in when it was mounted on the windshield. Next step was to remove those.

now, how easy it was... all I had to do was copy the GPX files out of the Pocket Query and paste them right into the QPX folder on the Nuvi hard disk. No need for the SD card since a PQ is maxed out at 1,000 caches and that used up hardly any space. wish I could attach a screen shot, but the caches show up as giant orange treasure chests on my screen when zoomed into at least 1.2 miles.

I hope this helps anyone with the same issue. All it took was a reset. Wish I thought of that about 7 years ago.
