+and_Janine Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 So I am using the intro app and I have a question about the dots that indicate where the geocaches are. There are green dots, the ones I can access through the intro app. Grey dots, I would need to upgrade to see these. But there's also another type of green dots, they're bigger and show a box inside the dot. What do these bigger dots mean? There's only two of them, at least in my city & surrounding area. When I first downloaded the app there was only one of them and now there's two of them. The second one that showed up is right near the one that was there when I first downloaded the app. I have looked at the info on the app and on the website but I don't see anything different about the geocaches. Thanks. Quote
+Gitchee-Gummee Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 This link from the Groundspeak Help Center should answer it all. This one provides more instructions regarding the Intro-app. Quote
+ZeppelinDT Posted December 8, 2015 Posted December 8, 2015 Bumping this thread to see if anybody ever found an answer to this question. The two links provided above do not provide any useful answer... as far as I can tell they don't mention these "larger" icons anywhere at all. I've seen the question pop up on reddit and in our local Geocaching FB group, and I've seen a bunch of different "guesses" as to what they mean, but nobody seems to have come up with an actual answer. From what I've gathered so far, the "larger" cache icons (i.e., the ones showing a container rather than a dot) seem to be caches that are unfound and that are close to your physical location, but they're not necessarily the ones that are THE closest. I thought maybe they were to highlight the closest "beginner" caches, but they also don't necessarily match up with the caches that GC.com highlights as "beginner" caches, so I can't find any real explanation for what it means. +ZeppelinDT Posted December 9, 2015 Posted December 9, 2015 Update: I did some more digging and in addition to this thread I found discussions on this question on the Geocaching subreddit and in some GC Facebook groups, and it seems like everybody had a different answer, none of which were authoritative, so I just went right to the source and e-mailed Groundspeak. This is the response I got in case anybody else has been wondering about this: The larger green dots indicate that those geocaches are recommended to you by our system. There is no difference in them other than they are recommended as the three best geocaches based on your location. Quote
